Obituary of Connie Lee Calhoun
After a long and determined, near twenty-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), Connie passed away at home in the early hours of January 3, 2019, with her husband John and nurse Ann Marie by her side. Connie was predeceased by her father Sam. She leaves to mourn her mother Vera Calhoun; husband John Morrison; children Claire and Aidan; sisters Kim Ray (Irv) and Martie Calhoun; and many, many other relatives and friends. Connie was born in Riverside, NB, the eldest of three daughters. Because her dad served in the RCAF overseas, Connie and her family spent some five years of her childhood in Belgium and France. After their return to Canada, they lived first in Trenton and then in Peterborough, ON. Connie attended the University of Guelph, where she earned an honours degree in French Literature. She went on to study for a year in Aix-en-Provence, France, before returning to Canada and subsequently joining the Government of Canada Translation Bureau in 1978. She worked for the Bureau—first in Ottawa, then in Quebec City and finally in Winnipeg—having paused only for the births of Claire and Aidan, until her worsening health forced her onto disability leave in the late fall of 2000. During the 1980s, Connie served on the Parish Advisory Committee of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Quebec City. In the 1990s, she sang in the choir at Holy Trinity Church in Winnipeg. An attentive and kind-hearted listener and devoted friend, Connie will be missed by the myriad of people whose lives she touched. Connie's body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard on Friday, January 25 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Deborah Olukoju officiating. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Victoria ICU and HSC H6, the WRHA respite nurses and health care aides who cared so well for Connie for many years, the HSC Respiratory Clinic and Long-Term Ventilator personnel who performed Connie's trache care, and Dr Eleni Giannouli, who attended to Connie in her final years. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
