Mildred Jean Sproat

Mildred Jean Sproat of Kipling, Sask., passed away peacefully on September 27, 2019, at the age of 93. A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held in Kipling United Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, with lunch to follow in the Kipling Friendship Centre. Mildred was born on the farm in the Lansdowne area east of Kipling on April 7, 1926. She was the second of five children of May and Charles Cross. She attended Lansdowne School before going on to high school in Kipling and then taking a job in the local drug store. Mildred married Enos Sproat in 1949 and they had three children, Debbie, Kathie and Gordon. Mildred played a key role in the everyday workings of the family farm, loved playing with her grandchildren and contributed greatly to the success of a variety of community groups. She was a proud member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion for almost 70 years. She also devoted many hours to other local organizations, including Kipling United Church Women, the Kipling Museum and, in earlier years, the Kipling 4-H Homecraft Club that she helped to start. Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Enos in 2015. She is survived by her children, Gordon and Shelley Sproat, Kathie and Grant Mickelson, and Deborah Sproat, and by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Brady and Jessica Sproat and their sons Lincoln and Easton; Colby Sproat; Carter and Dionne Sproat and their children Reece and Drew; Andrew Beresh and Oryssa Marchak; Jake Mickelson; Alex Buchan; Laura Buchan; and, Christopher Buchan. She is also survived by her siblings: Hattie Cook; Murray Cross; Lane Cross (Jeanette); and, Elsie Schaefer (Alvin). She was pre-deceased by brother-in-law Harvey Cook, sister-in-law Eileen Cross, and son-in-law John Buchan.
