Obituary of Norman R. Smith
Norman R. Smith, 89, a lifelong Yonkers resident, died on Monday May 6, 2019 at St. John’s Riverside Hospital. He was born on August 15, 1929 to Nelson and Margaret Kleis Smith in Yonkers where he was raised and educated, graduating from Gorton High School in 1947. Norman then joined Refined Syrups & Sugars in Yonkers, where he worked in Purchasing for 30 years. He retired in 2004 after serving as a purchasing director at Kama Corporation in Avenel, NJ. Norm was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Yonkers Male Glee Club and the Sacred Heart Christmas Choir, and was a former member of the Yonkers Lions Club. He enjoyed singing, playing golf and spending time with his family. On May 2, 1959, he married the love of his life Maureen Tompkins in Christ the King Church. They recently celebrated sixty years of marriage. Mrs. Smith survives and lives in Yonkers. Norm graduated from Manhattan College’s Evening Division with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Smith (Mary Clare) of River Edge, NJ and three daughters, Mary Ellen Jones (Stephen) of Glastonbury, CT, Catherine Connolly (Brian) of Mahopac, and Patricia Smith of Seattle, WA. He was lovingly known as “Pop Pop” to his seven grandchildren, Emily, Brendan, Molly, Erin, Michael, Sean and Caroline, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Warren Smith. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Thursday at 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be held in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, May 10th at 10am. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
