Gerhard “Gary” Paul Gengel, 86, of Treasure Island, Florida went to be with the Lord on February 20, 2021. He was known for saying “never had a bad day” and for his infectious smile. He approached life with intense drive and relentless optimism about the world, his goals, and those whom he shared time with. Gary was very social and always found friends wherever he was. His belief was that you can never stop growing, and that led to his passion for learning through reading, studying history, and writing. He was blessed to have traveled the world while learning about different cultures, history, and making friends along the way. He also had a great love for the outdoors including golfing, fishing, snowmobiling, and RVing that he would share with his family.
He was born and raised in the Chicago area and graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. After his time in the Army in Korea as a Company Clerk, Gary began his career at Pillsbury and climbed the ranks into senior management. He then took his drive and experience and became co-owner of food and manufacturing businesses. Through these pursuits, the family would live in places like California, Virginia, Texas, and then settling in Minnesota while the children transitioned into adulthood and independence. Through his tireless efforts, he was able to retire in his early 50’s and was blessed with the ability to pursue his passions.
Gary would shine a light of optimism in good times and through many difficult situations while showing leadership in the Spirit of Christ for his family. He also approached life with intense drive and had no fear as he searched for truth and joy. Gary had the kindest heart for all and gave love to his wife Barb, as well as family and friends, with all his available energy. We will all miss his leadership and that spirit he brought and taught to the family.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie and Paul and his grandson, Greg. Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara “Barb”; four sons: Gary (Kim), Grant (Martha), Glenn (Stephanie), and Griff (Tiffany); nine grandchildren: Natalie Caruso (Chris), Nicolette, Gerhard (Kristie), Taylor Casanova (Jason), Janey (Hollis), Glen, Geoff (Maren), Samantha, and Alexandra (Keagan); three great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Odin, and Beckham.

Gary’s memorial service will be Tuesday, March 23rd at 2pm at Beach Memorial Chapel in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Live-streaming will be available for those who cannot make it in person. Please find instructions below:
