Situated on 132 acres replete with beautiful trees, meticulous landscaping and gently rolling hills, Sunset Cemetery marks a quiet refuge to honor the memory of loved ones. Our tranquil pond offers a relaxing site to reflect while feeding the swans, ducks, and geese who make the property home. Sunset Cemetery offers traditional ground burial, mausoleum entombment and cremation options.

The cemetery has three dedicated veterans gardens, as well as two Masonic gardens. A new cremation garden right by the heart-shaped pond on West Broad Street includes birdbath niches and visiting benches—both ideal for families. Upright monuments are another cremation option, as is ground burial and columbarium inurnment. We also invite families to plant a tree in memory of their loved ones.

Our team will guide you through the process of selecting from a variety of caskets, urns, vaults, bronze memorialization or upright granite monuments. For those interested, family estates can preserve your family name in one central location so future generations may return to reflect. Customization is our specialty, and your imagination is our only limit. We are here to help you secure arrangements that fit your style, finances and needs.

Sunset Cemetery hosts remembrance services on Mother’s Day, Memorial Weekend, Veterans Day and during the December holidays.

The cemetery is an official collection site for the M.A.S.H. Military and Service Heroes Pantry, and we work closely with the Franklin County Veteran Service Commission and AMVETS #1928 each December for the annual Wreaths Across America.

Sunset Cemetery is a favorite spot for Canadian geese, protected under both the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Ohio State law. This protection extends to the geese, gosling, nests and eggs. While we make every attempt to clean up any mess associated with their visits, we are unable to prevent it, and we appreciate your understanding as we host these protected birds.

History

Otis D. Leach founded Sunset Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, in 1922. Otis was an attorney from St. Louis, Missouri, before starting cemeteries near Columbus and Springfield, Ohio. His brother personally dug the cemetery's heart-shaped pond by hand.

The crematory at the cemetery was originally built as a mausoleum dedicated to Otis, and later became a repository for others. Cremation services are now provided by our local partners. Four generations of Leach descendants ran the cemetery as a family business until 1999.
