Ruth Justice Carter Read, known as granny to family and friends, passed away on July 3, 2008 at the age of 97. Ruth was born to Willie Alma Glenn and Joseph Herbert Justice on April 26, 1911, in Cherokee County, Texas. Ruth grew up in East Texas. It imparted on her a wonderful accent that remained with her all her life. She and her first husband settled in Big Spring, Texas. It was here that she gave birth to her two children. A life time Methodist, she was active in her church as well as her children's schools including PTA. Ruth was an avid reader which is a trait passed down to all subsequent generations. She was an exquisite, self-taught seamstress. She created beautiful clothes for herself and her daughter and in later years for her three granddaughters. Ruth was also the most wonderful cook. Her "granny" rolls, so named by her grandchildren, were famous at family gatherings. While in Big Spring, during WWII, Ruth cooked Texas style meals for pilots in training from England. She could be counted on to serve up a home cooked meal to those in need. Later in life Ruth got a second chance at love, met and married William Oscar Read in Abilene, Texas. They moved to Buffalo Gap where all of her grandkids have wonderful memories of spending their summers. In Buffalo Gap Ruth was an active member of the garden club which was exemplified by both her flower and vegetable gardens. When W. O. Read retired they moved to central Texas to be closer to family. They settled in Burnet, where Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Narfe. W.O. Read passed away in the fall of 1994. Strong willed and self reliant, Ruth continued to live in Burnet. She enjoyed her roses, a great cup of coffee, perusing garage sales and Friday lunch at the Riverwalk Cafe. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mary and Eva, her brother Herbert, and her husband William Oscar Read. Left behind to cherish her memory is her son Terry Carter and wife Joycelyn, her daughter Nina and husband Jack Crier; her grandchildren Tim and wife Mary, Jack and wife Natalya, Dee Andra, Lynda, Nina and husband Graham; great grandchildren Justin, Daniel and wife Samantha, Audry, Reagan and Garrett; along with nieces and nephews and many other loving relatives and friends she met through the course of her life. The family would like to express their gratitude to Ruth's friends at the Clairmont Retirement Center and to the staff at the LBJ Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Dr, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ruth's name to the First United Methodist Church in Burnet, Texas or to the EMS in Johnson City, Texas.
