

Irma Jean Resig Mathews, 84, of Cordova Tennessee passed away in the early hours of Sunday, July 30, 2017 after a brief illness. Mrs. Mathews was born June 16, 1933 in Altoona Pennsylvania where she attended St. Leo’s Catholic grade school, graduating from Altoona Catholic High School in the Spring of 1951.
After high school, Jean attended the Zeth Business School and was later offered a position at Frozen Foods, Inc. also located in her hometown of Altoona. She worked there until meeting and marrying MgySgt. Robert William Mathews, USMC on Saturday, May 11, 1957.
The military life led to the couple being stationed at numerous bases across the United States, including the island of Oahu, HI. Ultimately, the Mathews settled in Memphis, Tennessee in 1970 where Jean enjoyed a long and successful career at Plant Maintenance Service Corporation. After his 25-year Marine Corp career came to a close, Mr. Mathews joined the Navy Memphis Federal Credit Union and later, the Memphis Area Teachers Credit Union.
Both Jean and Bob were extremely active in volunteering at St. Francis Catholic Church while enjoying traveling and spending time with their family and friends.
Mrs. Mathews is the daughter of Irma Boslet Resig and Frederick Homer Resig of Altoona Pennsylvania, both deceased. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Bob, her daughter Diane Marie, son Robert William and sisters Joan M. Smith, and Dorothy J. Resig. She leaves her daughter, Carol Mathews MacIntosh, son-in-law David G. MacIntosh Jr., of Cordova Tennessee, grandson David G. MacIntosh III of West Palm Beach, FL and her dear sister, Clara M. Tomlinson of Altoona Pennsylvania.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, followed by a graveside service and reception at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N Germantown Parkway, Bartlett Tennessee.
