Marcia (neé Cohen) Frey was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She grew up with her parents Hyman and Bessie Cohen, her sister Eileen Judith (Judy) and her brother Jay. She passed away peacefully in her home in Houston, TX on September 1, 2020.
Marcia spoke fondly of family gatherings with aunts, uncles and cousins and of growing up on Butler Avenue with a lot of children who played in the street. She felt the families in the neighborhood were like one big family. Fortunately, she lived down the street from the Ludwigs. Lenny Ludwig and Bob Frey were cousins who were like brothers from the age of 13. Bob spent some of his teenage summers with the Ludwigs, and Uncle Will told Bob his favorite girl in Buffalo was Marcia. One summer Bob asked Marcia on a date. They were close immediately except for when Bob went back to the Bronx and wrote very few letters. His letters were “not very good” according to Marcia, so she started dating someone else. When Bob heard about the other guy, he came to Buffalo to propose to Marcia. They both had a lot to say and had notes to talk from.
Marcia’s parents both worked, and she filled in as a great mother-like sister to younger brother Jay. She also worked at Cohen’s Kosher Delicatessen, their parents’ deli when she was a teenager.
She attended State Teachers College Buffalo and finished her degree at San Francisco State University in American history.
Marcia maintained a neat, comfortable home through multiple moves to different countries and cities. When she welcomed guests into their home she made sure they had everything they needed to feel comfortable. Marcia was a skilled watercolor artist. Her beautiful paintings have been in shows where she sold some pieces and many are hanging in their house. She loved to read, do crosswords (in pen and fast!), play word games on her iPad, play Scrabble competitively with her girls, and listen to Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond.
Her granddaughter, Erin, fondly remembers playing rap music on the TV to provoke a reaction from her grandma. Marcia came home and didn’t say anything. Then later asked Erin if rap was playing and said she had heard it the whole time. Erin says: “As much as she probably disapproved of my music, I appreciate that she approved of my choice in studying the arts and made my higher education possible. I will be forever grateful.”
Marcia and Bob had a great sense of humor and shared many fun times with family and lifelong friends.
Marcia is survived by her brother, Jay Cohen, daughters, Sharon Frey and Elaine Kracht, her son-in-law Joe Kracht, and grandchildren Sean and Erin Kracht. Marcia was preceded in death by her husband Robert Frey and her sister Eileen Judith (Judy) Cohen.
