I think I have an original story about my Aunt Veta. It was a battle of wills, and I WON! Many years ago, and I’m pretty sure it was when they were still living on Hendon Ln. I had spent the night at the Middleton house like cousins do. In the morning she made me some oatmeal for breakfast. I didn’t do oatmeal. I still don’t today. She told me that I could stay at the table until I ate the oatmeal. That was fine with me. While everyone else went to play, I stayed at the table. I wasn’t going to eat the oatmeal. What seemed like hours later, she brought me a scrambled egg for breakfast. This makes me the only living person who out lasted her and lived to tell about it!

I will miss my phone calls with Aunt Veta.

We had all come back from some kind of field trip, and were at the Middleton’s first house. All the aunts(Veta, Sara, Anna Marie, Dolly) were in the kitchen scrounging up lunch. I was about 6 or seven years old.

We were having sandwiches, so I went up to the kitchen counter to ask aunt Veta what our choices were. She said, “Ham & Cheese, Pimento Cheese, Liverwurst, or COW TONGUE”! I didn’t believe her about the Cow Tongue, so I made her show me it. She opened up a Tupperware container..., and there it was..., a whole Cow Tongue in all it’s pebbly glory.

Well, I was completely “horrified”, but she said “you don’t know what your missing; it’s really good”, as my mother nodded her head in agreement and licked a big dollop of Liverwurst off her spoon!

Needless to say, I opted for the Ham & Cheese.

Great times with great ladies!

John, and all the girls (now women),
I am so sorry for your loss. Your mother was an inspiration, both on the soccer sidelines and off. What a wonderful woman. I'll never forget her strength, integrity and compassion. It's clear that all the best of her still lives on in her children.
God bless you all,
