Gaylon proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He enjoyed golfing, doing yard work, researching family ancestry, plus he loved Harleys and muscle cars. Above all else, Gaylon treasured spending time with his family. Gaylon and his late wife Barb travelled the U.S. extensively and had a lot of fun in their travels. Gaylon and Barb purchased homes for their son and grandchildren so they could save them, rehab them and have beautiful homes in which to live. Gaylon was a caring, hardworking man who would always lend a helping hand to those he loved. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of nearly 51 years, Barbara (nee Nix) McHugh; brother, Larry McHugh and brother-in-law, Robert Lovatto.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his son, David (Sherrie Heaton) McHugh; grandchildren, Jon (Jennifer) McHugh, Emily McHugh, Claire Heaton, Brianna Schmerbauch and Jessica Gehner; sisters, Camilla and Donna McHugh; nephews, Bobby Lovatto, Michael, William and Marty Nix; niece, Nicole Haner; brother-in-law, Michael (Donna) Nix; sisters-in-law, Pat McHugh and Beverly Lovatto; plus countless friends and extended family.
Visitation will take place at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home in Belleville, IL on Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 12 PM to 3 PM, immediately followed by a graveside service officiated by Pastor Larry Ridenour at Valhalla Gardens of Memory. A memorial ride will also be scheduled at a later date.
