Walter Lloyd Pickard, 74, of Gaylord, Michigan, died October 21, 1997 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan. A funeral service was held on October 25, 1997 at Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Michigan. His remains were cremated.
Walter was born December 26, 1922 in Toronto, Canada. Although he grew up in the Detroit area, he loved living in Northern Michigan and enjoyed fishing, bowling and golfing. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and served honorably during World War II as a Rifleman. He fought in the campaign battles of Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He earned the Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with 3 bronze battle stars, among others.
He was predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Amelia Pickard and by his only brother Maurice H. Pickard of Roseville, Michigan. He was followed in death by his only nephew Richard J. Pickard, of Battle Creek, Michigan on December 22, 2017. He is survived by his only niece Ann R. Pickard also of Battle Creek.
Walter will be awarded military honors at a private graveside service, where his remains will be buried next to his parents. Interment of ashes will be at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East in Clinton Township, Michigan on September 26, 2020 at 11:30 am. A small luncheon for family will follow.
