Nona Graybeal Overcast, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend did not let her cancer diagnosis slow her down. She was determined to live life to the fullest through yoga, spin, wakesurfing, skiing, long walks by the lake and biking Going-to-the-Sun-Road in Glacier National Park.
She was our ‘honorary doctor,’ her dream job as a young woman growing up in Missoula, Montana. She spent hours researching and implementing healthy recipes along with vitamin and exercise regimens. The knowledge she achieved in natural healing, combined with western medicine, turned a 6-month diagnosis into 10 years of growth and spiritual enlightenment.
She was born in California, to Lloyd and Ann Graybeal in 1945, which gave her passion for the ocean. You can take the girl out of the ocean, but you can’t take the ocean out of the girl. She and her beloved husband of 54 years, David Alan Overcast, traveled the world together visiting the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, Bora Bora, New Zealand, Venezuela, and Hawaii. Their adventures took them bike riding through European wine country and visiting historic sites in Zurich, Berlin, Germany, and Frankfurt. Nona and Dave set out with dear friends navigating the canals by boat in France and cruising the scenic waters of Alaska.
Her joy of adventure depicts only a small portion of her life. Her true passion was her family. Her children Chad and Courtney and grandchildren Garret, Madi, Ryan, Declan, and Liam were her pride and joy. Every year we all gathered at Flathead Lake, Montana for boating, surfing, gardening, cooking, reading, long walks, card games, as well as raspberry and Bing cherry picking. Mostly, we ate her homemade raspberry jam while she slaved over a hot oven.
Family and friends gave her many nicknames, among them Mamacita, Grandma, Mimi, Noni, Cutie Pie, and Little Stinker. These nicknames represent who she is, love, forgiveness, helpfulness, kindness and sometimes she was…a little stinker. She lived life to the fullest and rarely rested. Her dedication to helping her friends and family here on earth grants us the ability to rest easy, knowing after 77 beautiful years, she will be guiding and caring for us from Heaven.
A celebration of life for Nona will be held on Sunday, May 29th at 1 p.m. at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903.
