Rose Helen Calvina, age 105, passed away peacefully at her home in Tamarac, FL on May 11, 2020, surrounded by her granddaughter, Valerie and her long- time, loving care givers, Samantha, Golda and Cordelia. In addition to Valerie (Jim), Rose is survived by her daughter, Anita (Bill), granddaughter, Linda, great grandsons, William and Julian and many nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Alfred.

Rose was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. She moved to Allentown, PA, where she raised her family and then moved to Broward county 47 years ago.

Growing up during the Great Depression taught Rose not only the value of a dollar, but also the importance of being self reliant and independent. Rose lived in her own home and until three years ago managed much of her household activities. She never, however, ceased to be totally engaged with overseeing her household and in discussing current news events.

Rose volunteered for the Broward County Republican Party. Often called a “feisty Sicilian”, Rose loved cooking, enjoying a glass of rose wine and going to the beach to smell the sea and listen to the sound of the ocean. A sharp dresser, Rose was never without lipstick and rouge. Even in her final days, people around Rose always knew where she stood on an issue -- sharp minded and never shy about stating her opinions.

She also loved listening to the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como and Connie Francis. One of Rose’s favorite songs was “Que Sera, Sera”, which she sang on her 105th birthday party.

To those she leaves behind, Rose will always be remembered as someone who you could always count on to be there for you day and night, who never wavered in her beliefs, who believed in the importance of family first and who enjoyed life’s simple pleasures.

The family would like to thank her devoted caregivers and Trustbridge Hospice for their dedicated and compassionate care to Rose.

Donations may be made to Catholic Charities and Trustbridge Hospice.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 15, 2020, 8:45 - 9:30am at Kraeer Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 1 N. State Road 7, Margate. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 10:00 am, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 1400 S. State Road 7, North Lauderdale. Interment to immediately follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, North Lauderdale. Due to the Covid-19 Virus, visitation, Mass and graveside service will be limited to ten people.

Rose and I had a special relationship
At one time we did wonderful lunches and as she gave up driving , I would take her.

She was my Aunt Rose, the Mother of my cousin Anita.

As Children, Anita and I spent many hours together playing at
each other's home. When Aunt Rose knew I was coming, she
always prepared my favorite meal which was Lamb Chops and
French Fries. They were delicious

Now, many years later,I think of Aunt Rose whenever I prepare
Lamb Chops and French Fries.

Even though I have not seen Aunt Rose for many years, I think of
her whenever I prepare a Lamb Chop.

To my cousin, Anita, and her Family...My Brother Nino and I are so sorry for your loss. Love, Annette

My connection with you is through one of my dearest friends, your granddaughter Valerie. I had the pleasure of meeting you a very long time ago. But although I didn’t get back to visit, Valerie continued to share stories and send pictures of her visits with you, especially your birthday celebrations. I have never seen anyone so impacted by love and adoration as Valerie was with you. You truly were a bright light in her world. I know you will be so missed by your family, caregivers and friends. I will continue to always smile when hearing a “Grandma Rose” story. Rest In Peace sweet lady.

My Rose aka Rosealee . Attitude, spunk, and wit are the words to describe her. She captured my heart and so was easily thought of as Grandma! It really was a honor to please this 100 year old lady for five beautiful years, making it to 105 as she was enthusiastic and very appreciative. I loved her dearly and she accepted my family. She was always involved and would often give me positive advice. She taught me patience and sharpened my skills as she was always ahead of me; sorry, I can’t deny. You will be greatly missed. I will never find another Rose Calvina- warm, loving, and affectionate.

Whenever I think of Ms. Rose I ask myself, have I ever met someone who was 105 years young? Well the answer is no! My first time meeting Ms. Rose, she was approaching her 100th birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised by her wit, charm, humor and personality. She was interviewing for an assistant for seven evenings and by happenstance, I stumbled upon her advertisement in the Tamasix News and the rest is history.

Ms. Rose enjoyed cooking, shopping, and going out to eat. She was an avid reader of the Sun Sentinel Newspaper and would save articles she thought that could be of interest, and shared them with me when I arrive in the evening. I enjoyed those evenings with her because she was a delight to be around, and she loved to talk. She also enjoyed watching "The Good Wife" on Sunday nights.

On her 105th birthday, she could not get enough of "Young At Heart" by Frank Sinatra, and we both sang it too... Rosalie, there are so many cherish memories of you, but time and space may not permit me to write everything here. You are gone, but I am sure that you are not going to be forgotten.

Always Golda.

Dear Rose,

I will miss all the times we were together at your home, the beach and restaurants. You were always happy, funny and made sure I had enough to eat.
Everytime your daughter called you would always ask about me and how I was doing.
On behalf of the Wentz family I would like to offer my condolences to my wife Anita, Linda & Valerie.
May you rest in peace - Bill

Dear Grandma,

Thank you for accepting me into your wonderful family and always treating me like a grandson you loved. I'll miss doing our taped conversations about your growing up in New York and your trip to Italy on a cruise liner at the age of 8. Know this, you were a remarkable woman who participated fully in life until the last hours, getting and giving all a person could possibly experience in 105 years. Your life set a great example for so many and good and sweet memories of you live on forever. Love...Jimmy
