It is our great honour to announce the well-lived life of George S. Town on the 11th of May 2022. At 5pm, he was released from his reality and left behind the love of his life Joyce. His wife of 65 years. Predeceased by a granddaughter and with the remaining family of 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Born and raised in Winnipeg from 1935 till 1967, he attended Earl Grey, Lord Roberts, Gordon Bell high school and Tech Voc vocational school. Following which he was employed as a railroad fireman for CNR, during layoff times at CNR he worked part time pipe insulation with his brother-in-law. He advanced his way up the ranks to railway Engineer where he worked most of his life. In later years, he transferred to Via Rail where he finished off his Railway career. He spent his spare time in Winnipeg renovating homes and maintaining vehicles for himself and family. He was reluctantly relocated to Grande Pointe in 1967 by the construction of the new Winnipeg transit maintenance facilities.
His Grande Pointe farm was the sight of numerous well-attended family get togethers for all types of celebrations. This made the life on the farm well appreciated by his children, which alleviated the stress of the move. While on the farm, he balanced work life, family life and running a successful mixed farm. Not an easy task, but one he excelled at.
In 2000, he retired to Courtenay for the remainder of his life while maintaining his close connections in Winnipeg through semi-annual reunions. He touched the lives of many in the Comox community through his generous and caring donations of time and money to support local charities. Therapeutic riding was one of his favourites, highlighted with his donation of a horse named Licorice. Another favourite was his collaborating with challenged people in the Life Skills program at the pool. There were numerous other charities that he held close and generously supported as well.
Always enjoying a good meal with friends and family, he frequented Jo Klassen’s Restaurant where he got to know the owner and staff on a personal level. He spent time attending to numerous vegetable and flower gardens at his home sharing his vast harvests and knowledge of plants with a great many friends.
With Dad’s involvement with many charities a donation to a charity of your choosing would be appreciated if you feel so inclined. An enjoyment of his life and achievements has been celebrated by his close family. As per Dad’s wishes his ashes will be spread at a specific location, hence no services will be held.
