

Robert Owen Butler, World War II Veteran, died in El Paso on Thursday, April 23rd, 2015. He was born in Cliffside, North Carolina. He grew up in Denver, Colorado and attended George Washington Clayton College from 1929 until June 1940. He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II spending four years overseas ending his service on the island of Iwo Jima, North Pacific Theater of War. After his discharge from Army service in October 1945, he attended and earned a BBA degree from the University of New Mexico in 1952. He married Laureen LaRue French of Albuquerque, NM in 1949 and moved to El Paso. He retired from El Paso Natural Gas Company after serving 31 years. After retirement from EPNG, he became chief financial officer of Opcode, Inc., a technical software company headquartered in Austin, Texas. This company developed software for the operating systems of major nuclear laboratories in the U.S. and Western
Europe. In 1992 he became a charter member of El Paso Opera serving as Treasurer and the Accountant until 2005.His wife Laureen died on December 25, 2001 after serving many years in the El Paso Opera. He is survived by his three daughters and two sons; Robert L. Butler, Christine Zirkel, Coree Shipley, Owen W. Butler and Mary Monroe. He was much loved by his children and he passed in his own home, peacefully, on his own terms with love surrounding him with his family and friends by his side.
