He was born March 5, 1949, in El Paso, Texas, the firstborn of 17 children, to Ruben and Martha Garcia.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Ruben and Martha Garcia; brothers, David Garcia and Arturo “Artie” Garcia.
Sonny will forever be remembered by his wife of 41 years, Sandra Garcia; son, Sonny Ruben Garcia; daughter, Lauren Kristine Garcia; he is survived by six brothers, Frank Garcia, Rick Garcia, Ernie Garcia, David Garcia, Luis Garcia and Bobby Garcia and eight sisters, Bertha Molinar, Molly Gaytan, Norma Vasquez, Olga Crowe, Gloria Klingborg, Yolanda Ortega, Naomi Garcia and Elaine Garcia and their spouses. He is also remembered by his beloved thirty-one nieces and nephews.
Sonny was accomplished in many areas, he received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, University of Texas, El Paso, 1972, a Master of Arts in Education, Psychology, and Guidance, University of Texas, El Paso 1975, a Doctorate in Juris Prudence from Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law 1988. Sonny was well traveled and was notably a most successful entrepreneur during his lifetime. However, what he held most dear were his abundant family and friends.
To his family and friends, Sonny leaves behind a distinguished legacy of empathy, humility, inclusiveness, generosity, balance, and patience. Sonny recognized the importance of being sensitive to other’s feelings, owning up to one’s limitations, asking for help, seeking to serve others while sharing credit, soliciting and listening to many voices, being liberal with his time, advice, and support, giving life it’s due, and bestowing compassion to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He embodied these qualities and embraced a lifetime of fellowship amongst his family and peers. His family recalls the resounding quote from all his friends: “He is such a nice guy”. Sonny lived his life selflessly and was devoted to positivity, service, and loyalty. His charismatic personality was magnetic and had a wonderful quality one could inherently trust. To know him was to love him. Take comfort in knowing that Christ has called one of his most beautiful angels back home.
A Celebration of Sonny’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 from 10:00AM to 1:00PM with a Prayer Service beginning at 10:00AM at Crestview Funeral Home. Services entrusted to Crestview Funeral Home, 1462 North Zaragoza Rd, El Paso, TX 79936.
