

Richard Eugene Short, 81, of Gadsden, Alabama went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 28, 2020. Services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Collier Butler Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm with chapel service at 1pm.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Lola Mae (Thrasher) Short.
He is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Johelen (McGriff) Short. Daughters- Beverly (Tommy) Moon and Richie (David) Couch; Grandchildren- Alex Moon and Lauren McClendon. Brother - Ronald E. Short, Sister - Regenia Short Stephens, Brother in law- Freddie (Jannette) McGriff, Sister in law - Charlene McGriff and a host of nieces and nephews.
Richard was born July 15, 1939 in Gadsden, Alabama. He was a 1957 graduate of Emma Sansom High School. While in high school he was a DO student working at Baptist Hospital for many years. He began his career with the Alabama Department of Transportation before transitioning to Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. where he worked for 35 years. Richard had many hobbies including stained glass, model-making, toy collecting, photography and collecting chess sets. He enjoyed volunteering with the Emma Sansom High School Rebel Band as a chaperone and bus driver.
Richard never met a stranger and will always be remembered with a smile on his face. Richard and Johelen spent their winters at Lake San Marino Resort in Naples, Florida where they developed lasting friendships with other snowbirds.
Richard was kind, generous and very loving and relished spending time with his two grandchildren.
He spent many mornings with the Noccalula Jack's Roundtable Crew who will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
Pallbearers are Craig McGriff, Judson McGriff, Dale McGriff, Joseph McGriff, Matt Moon, Gunter Moon, Miles Mason and Paul Shamblin.
