Rev. Marjorie Hicks Walker, 86, of Greeley died April 11, 2013 at Garden Square at Westlake. Rev. Walker was born June 27, 1926 to Herbert L. and Rachel (Jackson) Hicks in Richmond, Virginia. Rev. Walker married Lt. Col. Sidney D. Walker on December 3, 1949 in Houston Texas. Lt. Col. Walker died on January 6, 2001.
At the age of nine Rev. Walker received Jesus in her heart, and was baptized in water at Trinity Baptist Church in Richmond. At the age of twenty-eight, she was baptized in the Holy Spirit at Jerusalem Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C) in Denver. In 1961 she was recognized as a missionary/minister in C.O.G.I.C. She was later credentialed in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World as an Evangelist. In 1988 Rev. Walker was ordained in the Assemblies of God to continue her work as an Evangelist and Associate Pastor with Outreach Ministry to seniors at Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Greeley, Colorado. She is listed in the archives of the Assembly of God Headquarters as the first female African-American credentialed in the Rocky Mountain Region by the organization.
For 35 years, Rev. Walker performed Nursing Home Ministry. Facilities include Fairacres Manor, Centennial Health Care Center, Kenton Manor, Garden Square, Benjamin Square Retirement Center and Birchwood Senior Community and hospitals.
Rev. Walker graduated from Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia in 1945 and Harlem Hospital School of Nursing (now Columbia University) in New York City, NY in 1949. She worked in various hospitals and in various departments including Psychiatric, Communicable Disease and Tuberculosis Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Texas, Colorado and Virginia. In Virginia she worked as a Public Health Nurse with IVNA and Richmond Health Department. She retired from nursing September 30, 1990.
Rev. Walker was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Rev. Marjorie Hicks Walker is survived by two daughters, Dr. Paleri W. Mann and husband Elder Dennis Mann of Greeley and Min. Sigrid B. Walker of Centennial; three granddaughters, Psalmist Carole Pearson (Christopher), Psalmist Theresa Mann and Thelma Mann, Psalmist Benjamin’s widow; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rev. Dorothy H. and Deaconess Florence H.; two brothers, Richard H. and Deacon Leonard H.; and Sister Cousin Edith Gregory. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lt. Col. Sidney Walker; a grandson, Psalmist Benjamin Mann; and six siblings.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
