Bettie Jean Thomas was born March 29, 1950 in Pace, Mississippi to the union of the late Jimmie Lee and Dorothy Mae Thomas. Bettie was one of seven children born to this union preceding her in death are her brothers Walter and Gregory Thomas. Bettie was the third eldest child of her parents. She was affectionately called “Bet” by many of her siblings and family members.
Bettie and her family moved from Mississippi to Detroit, MI in 1952. She attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Eastern High School in June 1968. She completed training at Detroit Business Institute for punch boarding. She also attended Wayne State University and Baker College for medical billing coding.
She met Michael Wilson in 1970 and they were united in matrimony September 17, 1971, and together had three children of their own: Tiffany, Zakiyyah and Sayyda. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife.
Bettie was employed as a medical biller for over 35 years, twenty-three years of service with Providence Hospital. During retirement she continued to work for Grosse Pointe Public schools in the cafeteria and housekeeping departments. She loved the kids and would often pay for their lunches or snacks out her own pocket if they did not have money.
Bettie was a mother to everyone and those whom she loved she took care of, whether it was family, friends, or her children’s friends. Because Bettie cared for everyone, she chastised with love and ruled with an iron fist. To know her was to love her and we all love “Bet”.
Bettie departed this life on November 10, 2021. She leaves to cherish her memories: her children Tiffany Mitchell (Kevin), Zakiyyah Omar (Hosia) and Sayyda Jemison (Curtis). Grandchildren Omari Mitchell, Amina Mitchell, Layla Humphrey, Marcel Davis III and Bentley (Grand dog). Siblings Earl Thomas (Yvonne), Audrey Stafford, Linda A’ve, and Larry Thomas. And one aunt Willa Mae Grant. And a large host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
