JoAnn “Jo” Spurlock was born in Galloway, OH, on March 4, 1932, to Hobert and Myrtie (Moore) Kidd. She died peacefully at home on May 9, 2022. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by six brothers, one sister, husband and father of her children, Clinton Gearheart, 1984; husband, Walker Spurlock, 2010; son, Kevin C. Gearheart, 2017; son, Keith Gearheart, 2018; and son-in-law, Rich Kensey, 2022. She attended Central High School and worked at the Rhodes Office Tower as a file clerk for over fifteen years. Jo babysat in her home for siblings Tim and Ed Conkel and their cousin, Becci Jo Conkel. Afterward, she worked for Columbus Developmental Center for ten years before retiring with twenty-five years of service with the State of Ohio. A “west sider” for decades, Jo was known for calling square dances, saving the life of a ten year old girl from a house fire, 1948; and serving as a writing correspondent for the Hilltop Record. Jo was a fun-loving person who will be remembered for her sense of humor, wisdom, and love of life. She was a wonderful cook who planned family gatherings including her own birthday parties. Eating out and shopping were her favorite things to do. Jo was a regular attender at Happy Home Baptist Church and had many friends in several churches. Former places of worship were Lockbourne Freewill Baptist Church and Warren Avenue Church of the Nazarene. She and Walker sang regularly at Echo Manor where they made friends of the residents. Jo enjoyed bluegrass music and frequented weekly bluegrass sings at various locations. Jo is survived by daughter, Karla Kensey; granddaughter Becca and John Dunlap and great grandchildren Zeke and Zelda. Daughter-in-law, Mary Gearheart; granddaughter Amelia and Tyler Compton and great grandson Keith; grandsons, Bryan and Louis Gearheart. Tricia Hess, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters Courtney and Nikki Gearheart. Grandson Clint and Jessica Gearheart and great grandchildren Kevin, Lizzy, and Colt Gearheart. She also leaves behind a brother-in-law and several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, co-workers and a host of friends. Walker’s daughters, bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren were also loved by Jo. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 2-4 pm at SCHOEDINGER GROVE CITY 4242 Hoover Rd. (Hoover Rd at Kingston Ave) where funeral service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022 at 10 am with Pastor Larry Swartz officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.
