Ethan River Powassin, beloved son, brother, cousin, joined our ancestors December 21, 2024, with loved ones by his side. He was born at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario on March 15, 1998 and was the second oldest of five siblings. He attended elementary school at Windigo Island School and graduated from Warroad High School in Warroad, Minnesota in 2017. Ethan River lived on Windigo Island his whole life and enjoyed hunting, boating, harvesting, and was an avid gamer. His love and commitment to his community showed in his volunteering or helping whenever anyone needed an extra hand. The bonds he had with his cousins, or brothers rather, were strong, and he loved spending time with family.

Ethan is survived by his mother and stepfather, Vanessa and Clint, sisters Jenessa and Esha, and brother Zach. He was adored for his kind, caring, and humorous personality and had a very close relationship with them all. He leaves to cherish his memory, his cousins, who were like brothers, Luke, Sheldon, Tyler, Jordon, Shane, Kevin, Austin, and many more. His aunt and uncle, Emily and Curtis, numerous aunts and uncles, and the friends he made.

He is predeceased by his grandparents, Patsy Powassin, Harold Ross, Cheryl Beadle, his father Craig Shawataskung, his sister Mia Powassin, his aunt Jenny Powassin, and numerous great aunts and uncles.

Ethan’s departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family, community, and countless others who loved him deeply. Traditional services by Mary Jane Scott and words from Pastor Kenny Daniels will be held on Windigo Island. Wake starts Friday, January 3, 2025 at 12:00pm and his service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 10:00am
