Roy Eldon Stubbendick, son of Henry Diedrick Johann Stubbendick and Edla Van Meter Stubbendick, was born April 7, 1921, at a farm home three and one half miles South West of Unadilla, Nebraska. He joined a sister, Rose, nine years older and a brother, Dale, six years his elder. Roy was made a child of God through Holy Baptism at the Unadilla Methodist Church. He attended elementary grades at Russell Creek rural school near Unadilla and graduated from Unadilla High School as Salutatorian of his class. While finishing High School he lived with his brother, Dale and wife, Lucille. On April 25, 1942, Roy was joined in Holy Matrimony at Christ Lutheran Church near Syracuse, Nebraska, to Adele Catherine Evers of Lorton, Nebraska. They made their first home in a one room apartment in Lincoln, Nebraska.
During World War II Roy enlisted in the Army Air Corp on October 12, 1942. His initial training began in Hays, Kansas, where on a brief furlough, Roy hitch-hiked home in time to witness the birth of his first daughter, Judy Marie, born on February 28, 1943. His first assignment was to a base in Childress, Texas, where he participated in Transition Pilot Training to the C47 airplane. Roy and his crew were then ordered to serve overseas duty in the China-Burma-India Campaign with their first base at Ledo, in Assam, India. Their assignment was to fly supplies to China over the towering Himalayan Mountains. After the war was over, Roy and his crew left Calcutta, India, on February 17, 1945, and arrived in San Francisco on March 16, 1945. Roy was awarded the Battle Star for the Battle of Burma. A certificate of appreciation was also later presented to Roy by the Chinese Air Force for his service in the Campaign.
Once home, he and Adele, and daughter, Judy, made their home in Syracuse, Nebraska. In Syracuse he was employed at the First National Bank and Trust of Syracuse for 14 years. While living and working in Syracuse, three daughters were born into the family of Roy and Adele. Donna Kay was born November 7, 1947. Marsha Alexis on October 7, 1950, and Patrice Joan on May 5, 1954. In June of 1962 Roy accepted the position of Vice President of the First National Bank of Exeter, Nebraska. Roy also became a Real Estate Broker, serving individuals and families in Exeter and farmers in the surrounding area. In 1992 Roy and Adele celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family at Lake Tahoe, renewing their wedding vows. Adele died of cancer July 6, 1996.
On Valentine’s Day in 1998 Roy married Wanda Ross of Lincoln in Cordova, Nebraska. They first lived in Friend, Nebraska, later making their home at Legacy Estates Retirement Community in Lincoln, Nebraska. Wanda passed away May 9, 2016.
Daughter, Donna Stubbendick Douglas, died March 17, 2013, in Portland, Oregon. Daughter Judy Stubbendick Beckman lives with husband, Ron in Westminster, Colorado. Daughter Marsha Stubbendick Votipka lives with husband, John, in Eugene, Oregon. Daughter, Patrice Stubbendick Holmes, lives in Phoenix, Arizona. Grandchildren include: Michele Beckman Hild (husband, Jeff), Melissa Michaels, Matthew Beckman (wife, Tomo), Nathan Erdkamp, Sara Votipka, Jessica Holmes, Meagan Votipka Voorhees (husband, William), and Lisa Holmes. Great-Grandchildren include: Adam Beckman, Isabella Angelus, Grace and Aaron Beckman. Step-Daughters include: Deborah Smith (husband, Duane) and Nancy Bowen (husband, Mark). Step-Grandchildren include: David Smith (wife, Amber), Ashley Smith Belt (husband, Neil) and Elizabeth Flowerday (husband, Seth), and Anne Bowen. Step-Great-Grandchildren include: Easton and Harper Belt.
Roy died October 19, 2019, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Roy Eldon Stubbendick, 98, died October 19, 2019, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Roy served as Vice President of First National Bank of Exeter, Nebraska, for nearly 50 years. Before that he was employed at First National Bank of Syracuse, Nebraska. Roy was an Army Air Corp pilot during World War II. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 11 a.m. at First Plymouth Church, 2000 D Street in Lincoln. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts are designated for the American Legion Post 218, 232 So Exeter Ave., Exeter, Nebraska, 68351.
