George Arthur Lucas was born in Stevenson, CA on October 3, 1918 and died on July 5, 2013 from complications with pneumonia. George grew up in the central valley. He was the third of five children of Manual and Anna Lucas. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railway as a locomotive engineer, was in the US Army stationed at Fort McArthur during World War II and was part of the US Army Band. He later graduated from USC in 1950 with a music degree that started a 30-year career in teaching and band directing. George loved his family, his grandchildren and his girlfriend, the love of his life Velma Blake. He was passionate about golfing and called it his “job” when he retired. George is survived by his sister, Lavina Monk, his children: Scott (Wendy), Tom (Kim), Lisa (Chris)Mais. He is also survived by his grandchildren Megan, Sean, Janelle, Casey, Zachary and many nieces and nephews. George’s Rosary will take place at St. Bartholomew Church, 5100 E. Broadway, LB, Monday, July 15, at 7:00p.m. His funeral will be Tuesday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “Harmony Project” 817 Vine Street, Suite 212, LA, CA 90038. Harmony Project promotes positive youth development to at risk kids through year-round music lessons and ensemble participation.
