

Janis Hartwell was born in Burns, Oregon on April 11, 1945. She passed away unexpectedly in Lubbock, Texas, on May 22, 2026, at 81 years of age. She grew up in El Paso, Texas, and graduated from Austin High School in 1963 where she was Valedictorian of her class. She also attended Texas Western University.
Janis is survived by her sons John Harrison (wife, Donna), Brian Harrison, Mark Harrison (wife, Michelle), William T. Hartwell (wife, Tomah); daughter Suzanne Hartwell; and grandchildren Hunter Harrison, Hannah Harrison, Danielle Harrison, Emily Harrison, and Chloe Hartwell. Janis is also survived by her brothers Billy Quier and Danny Quier (wife, Georgeanne). Janis was preceded in death by her husband William Hartwell III, ex-husband Joe Harrison, and sisters Joan Osborne, Judy Turner, and Jane Tomberlin.
Janis lived in Lubbock since 1970. She loved being involved in her community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a Zeta Tau Alpha alumna, and served as the Lubbock Alumni Panhellenic President. She also served on the board of Lubbock Women’s Club as Secretary and was active in book clubs.
Janis lived her life with kindness and love. Her resolute faith in the Lord gave her strength and grace, and her love touched everyone who knew her. Janis treasured her family and friends with all of her heart, and we will miss her beautiful smile.
Funeral services for Janis Hartwell will be held at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 2:00 pm with Associate Pastor Shera Atkinson officiating. Janis will be laid to rest with her family in El Paso, Texas, in the coming months.
