Ella Lucille Cavell

Lucille Cavell, 93, went to meet the Lord on July 10, 2019 in Marble Falls, Texas. Born in Harlingen, Texas, on June 20, 1926 to Pat W. Murphy and Elva Tope Murphy, her family soon moved to San Benito, Texas, where she lived until her high school years. Her family moved to Houston, Texas, where she graduated from Reagan High School in 1943. Lucille then spent three years at Sam Houston State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Teaching in 1946, at the age of nineteen. Later, she would earn her Masters Degree in Special Education at the University of Houston. She began her teaching career in the fall of 1946 at the Comfort, Texas High School at the age of 20, teaching English and typing. The following year, she moved back to Houston where she worked for Houston ISD until 1987, as a Special Education teacher, mostly at Roosevelt Elementary School. Lucille continued working as a substitute teacher for another 20 years.

In early 1951, Lucille met Thomas W. Cavell at a company event. She and Tom fell in love and were wed on June 10, 1951. They raised three children in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston. Tom lost a short battle with lung cancer in February 1997. During their 46 years together, the family spent many weekends at “The Cabin” in Montgomery County, took annual two week vacations to visit Tom’s parents and extended family in Illinois, Iowa and northern Michigan, and explored the scenic wonders of the American Southwest. Lucille enjoyed various social groups that included Oaks Presbyterian Church Women’s Circle, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority, Solitaires of St. Stephens UMC, and later applied for and joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). During those years, her principal concern was for her family and her students at Roosevelt Elementary, where for many years, never missed a single day of work. After the passing of her husband, Lucille was able to expand her travels with friends and family to places like Hawaii, Alaska, Colorado, and spend more time with her six grandchildren. Lucille had numerous life-long friendships, near and far, which she nurtured through her enjoyment of letter writing.

In the spring of 2014, Lucille moved in with her daughter, Leah, near Marble Falls, Texas and seven months later moved to Arbor House Assisted Living Community, only 15 minutes from Leah. There she spent her final four years enjoying socializing, reading, games, movies and visits from relatives and friends. We would like to thank the staff at Arbor House for the loving care she received. She truly enjoyed living there.

Lucille is preceded in death by her parents, Pat and Elva, her husband Tom and one of two brothers, Jerry Murphy, who was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 19, during his first year at Texas A&M University. She is survived by her brother, Norman P. Murphy of Granbury, Texas, her three children; Joel of Richmond, Texas; Leah Santry (Ed) of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; and Carol Settegast (Gig) of Houston, Texas. Lucille has six grandchildren; Nicholas Santry (29); Mitchell Santry (27); Jeffrey Santry (24); Weston Settegast (28); Marshall Settegast (25) and Camile Settegast (19).

A Memorial/Celebration of Life Service with lunch provided will be held Saturday, August 3, 2019, at 11:00 at Clements Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 Hwy 281 N., Marble Falls, Texas 78654.
