I knew Marie my entire life! My parents, Paul and Mary Ellen Richards were active members at Mason First Baptist, from the time they moved to Mason in 1951, shortly before my birth. She was a kind, loving friendly fixture at church, giving tirelessly of her time and talents. I remember her sweet voice, warm laughter, someone always there, always a friend, always loving. I last saw Marie when I went to see her about three weeks before she died. So many happy memories we shared that day.

I feel a great loss in Marie Lyons’ death.  Marie and I met in 1964 in Michigan.  I had been sent to work at Michigan State University with a Christian ministry on campus.  Marie was part of a prayer group that prayed for us who were at MSU reaching students for Christ.   1964-1966 were extremely fruitful years with scores of students coming to Christ.  I’m in touch, these 55 years later, with many of these students. Whether in churches or with Christian organizations like Cru, The Jesus Film, The Navigators, in the workplace, with athletes, prayer groups and Bible study groups, their lives have continued as Jesus followers.  I credit the prayers of Marie and the faithful women at MSU who had the heart to pray for us!
Marie prayed for me as a single woman in campus ministry and, since marriage, she has prayed for my husband’s and my ministry with The Navigators, Inc.  She has been “a part of us” for 46 years…a soul mate through her love, prayers and encouragement.  I will miss her greatly.  I thank God for bringing her into our lives.

I had met Marie at various venues when I first moved to Mason 35 years ago. She always made strangers feel like family. When I worked at Steele Elementary, we found our common connection; children.  After working late each night, Marie would greet me almost nightly during the warm weather months, as I walked to my car.  She was always outside working on her gardens.  Marie loved listening to any story of the day I had to share.  We also knew many of the same people and we would fill each other in on the news we had to share about our friends.  I looked forward to these visits quite a bit.  As my children grew older, Marie always made a point of inquiring about them.  Our visits lessened as I found myself racing home to take care of my kids but at least once a week, we took time to have a short visit outside before I left. A couple years ago, I told Marie that I was retiring and we were both saddened by the thought of our meetings "in the street" would come to an end. Marie was such a gracious, dignified, friendly and inspiring woman. I am a better person for having known her.  God speed to a lovely soul.

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of this wonderful woman, Marie.  She blessed us with her loving and kind words, timely cards and letters and above all, her prayers.  We are saddened that we cannot be there physically to support the family during this time of grief, but please know that we are praying  for you. RIH.

My sincere condolences are with the Lyons family and the many dear friends who will grieve Miss Marie's absence the most.  She was a true servant of the Lord and a shining example of how to live a good life filled with purpose.  Heaven is all the richer having gained such a sweet, giving soul.  She will certainly be missed.
