My mother could not have been a better mother.She loved her parents, sisters in such a deep way. I know she is happy with them.

To C. H. and children:
We are so saddened to hear of the loss of your mother.  Lurlyn, Patsy and I are so sorry that we were not in attendance at the services. We did not know until I ran into Carolyn this weekend.  You must know that Elaine is watching over her family in heaven.

Grandmama loved us all very much.  This was shown by how she was so interested in our lives.  I always found it soothing to sit and talk to her.

The most memorable advise she ever told me was, "We raised you well enough to know what is right, but it is up to YOU to do it."

She always had an open ear after turning the hearing aid up.  I like to think that she is still listening in.

Now you are in the apple tree, and we are on the ground, and we ask you now dear Grandmama to throw us an apple down.

For my sister Elaine who passed away Sunday, August 19, 2012:  My heart is forever broken for losing your presence upon this earth.  I have loved you deeply all my life, and I always will.  I believe that in time we will eventually be together again, and it is for that day to which I look forward when we, and all our loved ones who have gone before us, can be together again in an eternal place of peace, love and happiness.
 
Nothing is the same now, and it will never be.  You have been released from your suffering and you have been set free.  Your life has touched people of all ages, both near and far, and their lives are better for your gentle touch.
 
From this life on earth as we know it, God has said “Elaine, I want you to come home to be with Me – and so you did, with joy in your heart – not because you left your loving family, including me, behind but because it was His will that you come to be with Him.  We will miss your voice, your laugh, your sense of humor, your wise counsel, the hugs and the love you gave to us.  Our world has lost a kind, gracious and loving lady, who now resides in Heaven above.  
 
You will always be around us, engulfing us with your love, giving us your strength and courage and watching over us from above.  It is knowledge of that fact that will enable us to cope with the grief we feel as a result of our loss of your presence here on earth.
 
I have lost a sister; and, in some ways I have lost a mother too.  My sister Elaine had already left home and was working in Laurel, Mississippi when I was born.  On my 50th birthday Elaine called to wish me ‘Happy Birthday' and told me she remembered Daddy contacting her and telling her there was another girl in the family.  She said Daddy told her Momma and I were doing fine and she was so excited to have another girl in the family.
 
I was too young to remember my Grandmother and Grandfather, but Elaine brought them to life for me.  The knowledge I have of them came from Elaine.  I well remember the stories Elaine would tell me as a small child about them.  The stories the way she told them seemed so real that my grandparents seemed to be alive, and I guess in a way she did bring them to life for me.  I will never forget those stories, nor will I forget the times we had together when Elaine shared those stories with me.  Those times together are as vivid in my mind today as they were at the time I experienced them.  Elaine gave me something I could not have gotten anywhere else.  For that I am forever grateful.  Those simple stories became an inseparable part of me.
 
I don't remember a lot about the time Elaine lived in Westwego, Louisiana, ‘across the river,' but I have some pictures of Kenny, Elaine's first born son who is five years younger than me, and me at Elaine's home in Westwego.
 
When I was a child I would go and spend a week or two during the summer with Elaine.  Kenny, Dan and Stevie (“the Boys”) were born by then.  A ‘soft drink truck' would come down the street where Elaine lived and Elaine would buy cases of Barq's soft drinks – Root Beer, Cream Soda, Orange, and Strawberry.  I had never seen that many soft drinks at anyone's home before.  The Boys liked them; so did I.  While I was staying with Elaine she would always make me take a nap in the afternoon with the Boys; it was during times like that when she felt more like a “Mom” than a sister.
 
Anyone familiar with the New Orleans area knows how fast the water can rise during a heavy rain.  I used to like to sit on Elaine's front porch, watch the rain and the water rise in the street.  One summer Elaine let me go with “Miss Marie,” Elaine's next door neighbor, and the Boy Scout troop, to the Cabildo in the French Quarter and to St. Francis' Cathedral. When I came home and started to school that year, that little trip was my “show and tell” about what we did during the preceding summer.  As it turned out, our school class took a field trip to New Orleans that year to see those sights.  I will never forget that.  
  
Occasionally Momma, Daddy and I would ride the train to New Orleans and Elaine would meet us at Carlton Avenue. One time when Elaine was waiting for us to arrive she took Stevie to a nearby ‘five and dime' store where he got his first ‘Coon-Skin Cap.' 
 
Another summer Elaine, CH the Boys and I went ‘crawfishing.'  We caught two wash tubs full of them.  On the way back home the Boys fell asleep on the back seat of the car.  I was sitting between Elaine and CH.  We began hearing something crawling around.  When we turned the light on and looked back the crawfish had crawled out of the wash tubs and were all over the Boys in the back seat.  Needless to say, that interrupted our drive back to Elaine's home.
 
Christmas was always a big event for me as a child.  Elaine, Charlene and Clara Belle, my three oldest sisters, always brought me lots of presents.  The greatest gift Elaine gave me during those Christmas events were the memories, which will last forever.  I remember one year Elaine brought a big bag of chocolate ‘Silver Bells' – now called ‘chocolate kisses.'  She shared them equally among the Boys and me, another time she felt like a Mom and a sister.
 
Elaine and her family used to have a Cocker Spaniel named “Francis.”  The Boys and I always had to make sure the driveway gate was closed so Francis would not get out and run into the street.  One summer Francis was having puppies, under the door steps.  Elaine chased the Boys and me into the house, and would not allow us to watch the event, telling us that Francis would stop having puppies if we watched her.
 
One summer Elaine made me a pretty dress – blue and white taffeta – pretty, but uncomfortable and very hot!  Elaine took me with her to have our ears pierced for earrings.  We did that together and I still have the first earrings I bought for that occasion.
 
Recently Elaine gave me a Sterling Silver compact, with a mirror inside and a small figurine with two little girls, holding hearts, and the inscription “Sisters and Best Friends.”  I still have both.  Over the years every time I have looked at them I have seen Elaine, and I always will.  
 
As we were beginning our career we moved to Metairie and rented one segment of a duplex.  When we began looking for a home to purchase Elaine did not want us to move ‘across the river' because we would be further away – about five miles further.  Elaine thought Gretna was a ‘bad part of town.'  Gretna residents felt the same way about residents of Metairie.  While we were living in Metairie we would often go pick Stevie up to come play with our children, Tim and Rochell, who we called ‘Chell.'  It didn't matter what time of the day or night it was, 6:00 AM or Midnight, Stevie always wanted to stop at Burger King, about four blocks from our home, to get a ‘Whopper.'  That Burger King facility thrived while we were living there.
 
After Pam was born Elaine, Momma and I took Tim, Chell and Pam to see doctor Treadway; they all had earaches.  Pam was about three or four years old and Elaine let Pam roll off the doctor's examining table.  That was a fright, but if it had to happen it couldn't have happened at a better place.
 
After we retired and moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas Elaine told me she had a quilt top that Momma and one of her friends had pieced together by hand.  Elaine did not know what to do with it and asked me if I would help her.  Of course I told her I would.  After I finished the quilt and returned it to Elaine she told me that she was very well pleased with the quilt, that it meant a lot to her and that it brought back a lot of good old memories every time she saw it.  Elaine told me she was very happy with the quilt and had placed it in her guest bedroom.  Elaine said that every time Charlene came to visit her she allowed Charlene to sleep under the quilt and they always wound up reminiscing about some of the good, happy times they had shared around the time Momma and her friend pieced that quilt top.
 
The loving memories I have of Elaine are too many to enumerate.  Yes, we were born a generation apart, but that made no difference to us.  In our minds' eyes we were born on the same day and lived our lives together; love has no age – it lives forever.  Because I am the youngest, I have known Elaine, and my other sisters, all my life.  Elaine has always been there for me, with me – until now.  Now we are only two, Lynda and I, of the six girls born to Luther T. and Grace Coghlan, left to share our remaining lifetimes on this earth.  I pray we can live the rest of our lives, and enjoy our love one for another as Elaine and I have loved and enjoyed the life we shared.  
 
Even though life's circumstances did not allow Elaine and me to be physically near each other most of our lives, and therefore together as much as we would have liked to have been, that did not diminish the love we had for each other and we both understood that as only sisters who love one another can understand.  Those geographical differences made the times Elaine and I had together all the more valuable and I cherish the time we had together.  I have been truly blessed to have Elaine for a sister who has heretofore shared my entire life with me.  I will see her again and our love for each other will never die.
 
I am certain that Chell, Bertha Mae, Charlene, Clara Belle, Mom and Dad were there with open arms to welcome Elaine to her Heavenly home and are joyfully recounting good old memories as I sadly sit and write this tribute to my eldest sister, Mildred Elaine (Coghlan) Morris.  
 
I extend my deepest sympathy and love to Elaine's family, who are part of my family as well, and I want all of you to know that my grief runs just as deeply as yours.  Our grief differs only in that the life we shared with Elaine springs from different familial relationships and circumstances – God's will and Mother Nature's way.  God Bless you, all of you, give you strength and comfort in the knowledge that Elaine is now in a better place, that she loves you and that her spirit will live within your hearts forever.  I wish you happiness and peace of mind throughout the rest of your lives.  I love you, each and every one of you, no exceptions.  I always have and I always will, no matter what life may bring our way.
