Sallie Cora Schlegel Martinez

Sallie was born in Halifax, Pa., in 1917. She was a star basketball player for Hershey High and graduated from Philadelphia General Hospital with a nursing degree in 1940. She moved to New Orleans to work at Charity Hospital from 1941-1943, then worked at the original Ochsner Foundation Hospital from 1943-1956 as Director of Nursing. From 1956-1963 she held the position of New Orleans Director of Registered Nurses. From 1963 thru retirement in 1975 she worked in the orthopedic department of Tulane Medical School. After retiring from Tulane she went into private nursing working for various doctors until her second retirement in 1994 at the age of 77. All toll, Sallie spent 54 years in Nursing, and she was very proudly listed in the top 100 Nurses of New Orleans. She was an active member of the Carrollton Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed doing crafts, making quilts, anything she could do with her hands. She was a wonderful grandmother and spent much time with them leaving them with many fond memories.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Kelly Martinez, her parents John A. and Amy Deppen Schlegel , and her siblings Mrs. Zula L. Yohn, Mrs. Hilda Zerby, Mrs. Edna Kelley, Sgt. Maj. Lee R. Schlegel and Mrs. Lottie Ervin.

She is survived by her loving children, William K. Martinez, John A. Martinez(Trudy) and Kenneth L. Martinez(Maggi); grandchildren Jennifer Martinez, Courtney Gillespie(Bill), Nicole Carpenter(Wes), Kristopher Martinez, Seth Martinez, Chase Martinez, Grace Martinez, and great-grandson Rye Gillespie. She is also survived by her sisters; Elsie Knohr, Helen Gentile and Colleen Defraites and numerous nieces and nephews. Profound gratitude is extended to Covenant Home, where she spent the last 5 years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70001 on Tuesday, January 18, 2013 at 11:00 am.
