Eva “Marie” Kuffskie was born in Mobile Alabama on 7 August 1936, and passed from this earth on Wednesday, 25 January 2023 at the age of 86. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, George “Marvin” Kuffskie who died on 11 October 2014. Marie was the daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson Layfield Sr and Eliza Lee Layfield of Mobile and was the middle sister of William “Bill” Layfield and the late Woodrow “Woody” Layfield. Marie is survived by her two daughters: Leigh-Anne Johnson (husband Rick) and Sherri Gwendolyn Stegelman (husband Michael). Marie was a beloved grandmother known as “Rere” to Leigh-Anne and Sherri’s 7 children: Sarah Johnson Emerson, Shelby Stevenson, Alexandra Johnson, Christopher Stegelman, Megan E. Stegelman, Georgia Stegelman, and Brinkley-Anne Stegelman.
Marie married George Marvin Kuffskie in 1960, after meeting each other at Murphy High School in Mobile. Her professional career included working as a Director of Sales at LaFont Inn in Pascagoula, MS, as well as Bell Helicopters in Dallas, TX.. She was also an active member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Tourism Committee.
While she enjoyed working, her life was always focused on her family. She took pride in raising her daughters, and even more so as they had children. Marie was a devoted grandmother, known for late night phone calls and dance parties. She looked forward to visiting her grandkids and instilled in them a love for singing [at the top of your lungs] and dancing [like no one is watching].
As a woman of faith, Rere always told her family that she was “sending out (our) Guardian Angels”. Now, we are lucky to have the greatest Angel watching over us.
