She graduated from Hunter College and initially taught French at the Lenox School. After
completing her Master’s degree in Russian from Middlebury College in Vermont, Helen joined the
Foreign Languages Department at Simmons College in Boston where she taught French and Russian
for almost 40 years.
An avid international traveler, Helen explored such places as Antarctica, the Galapagos, Tibet,
Nepal, Cambodia, the length of the Nile River and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. She did all this long
before these places became fashionable as tourist destinations.
Her constant companion Mae Beck and she alternated seasons living in Roxbury, New Hampshire
and Aqualane Shores Naples, Florida, where for many years they maintained a 40’ sailboat. Later in
life Helen decided to learn to get a pilot’s license and flew propeller aircraft around New England.
She was a great storyteller and had a deep trove of anecdotes about her international adventures.
She will be sorely missed by her brother Stephen whom she grilled in French grammar at an early
age.
