Ruby Davis Cass, 100, of New Braunfels, died on March 19 at Eden Hill Nursing Home in New Braunfels. She was born May 23, 1914, in the community of Lone Star in Coleman County, Texas, to Will Davis and Addie Virginia Alexander. Her family moved to nearby Santa Anna, where she grew up and graduated from high school.
Ruby began a career in nursing at Sealy Hospital in Santa Anna where she attended the nursing school, and she later attended Colorado State University. She returned home before graduating to help her family, after her younger brother suffered a stroke.
In 1949, she married Kenneth Cass in Corpus Christi. The couple lived in several small towns in Texas, including New Braunfels, until settling in Houston where they raised their two children. They were both very family-oriented and enjoyed visiting with relatives when they could, at family reunions and holidays. After her husband retired, they moved from Houston back to their beloved home in New Braunfels.
Ruby worked in several hospitals and nursing homes in Houston and was privileged to “scrub” for several well-known heart surgeons while working in the Medical Center. She was active in the Baptist Church and kept her family involved in the church. She enjoyed music and singing and had a beautiful voice. Ruby really appreciated a good laugh and had her own witty humor. She was talented at oil painting and loved to decorate her home and tend to her yard. She loved being outside taking care of her plants and would talk to all the animals she would see in her yard. She loved the rain.
Ruby liked to cook for her family and made sure everyone was happy before she sat down to eat. She enjoyed spending time with her only grandchild, Caroline. She was very fond of her pets over the years, especially a toy poodle named Cherie. After retiring, she and Kenneth enjoyed going camping in their RV.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, as well as her five brothers and two sisters (Ernest Davis, Coleman Davis, Newton Davis, Delmer Davis, J.W. Davis, Eula Henderson, and Georgia Irion.)
She is survived by her son, Don Robert Cass of New Braunfels; daughter, Kay Ellen Cass Soper of Austin; granddaughter, Caroline Michelle Soper of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Eden Hill Nursing Home for their loving care of Ruby while she was a resident there.
The family will have a visitation at Zoeller Funeral Home in New Braunfels on Monday, March 23, from 4 – 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 at North Belton Cemetery.
