Joy was born to parents Raglan and Gladys Weir on 19th November 1959. Raglan and Gladys were hoping for a girl as their first born. In those days, Raglan could not be at the hospital for the birth. Raglan saw her weighing in at 8 lbs 8 oz; he named her Joy for how they both felt.
Our mother tells us that Joy was a quiet baby and eat up all her food and drank all of the milk available. Joy’s appetite for food continued all of her life. Joy was very playful and helpful having 5 “little brothers” – Robert, Raymond, Peter, Akin and Winston. Joy ruled her brothers like a tyrant Queen and her favorite pastime was to send us to the shop to get her some sweets. You would have one for your efforts and she would eat the rest. Joy was great at getting her brothers to do all sorts of tasks for her. A favorite was her Sunday morning paper round (bike deliveries of newspapers to houses from a newsagent) – Peter and Raymond would have to run with her bicycle to deliver the newspapers.
Joy was always tall for her age. Joy was a gentle soul, but if you crossed her she would stand up for herself. Joy was renown in Westminster road junior school and Holte Comprehensive school for fighting with boys. Joy protected her little cousin Pauline very well indeed. Joy had sisters / cousins – Laurel, Precious and Pauline. As a teenager, Joy spent a lot of time with cousin Pauline riding their bicycles and having fun at the WELD. They explored Handsworth and Sandwell Valley. Joy enjoyed sport, excelling in Netball.Joy enjoyed home economics (aka) cooking and would bring home all sorts of experimental dishes. Stuffed onions (with what??) was memorable for all the wrong reasons. After leaving Holte School, Joy went to Handsworth Tech studying secretarial studies. Her first job was at Birmingham Children’s hospital as admin assistant to the Director of Nursing. She soon tired of the NHS bureaucracy and joined New Hestia Housing. At this time her son Gavin David Weir was born in 1982. Gavin was the apple of her eye, and she devoted herself to him. Joy went to USA to further her career and after a year Gavin joined her. In New York, she met her future husband Curtis Tinsley. They soon moved to Palm Bay in Florida where they supported mother Gladys and grandmother Kathleen. Joy quickly found work at a ladies fashion store Dillards. Joy had a vast number of customers/ friends who knew that she would always find the right dress and give them a few laughs as well. Joy left Dillards to work in the Holiday Inn group of hotels. At this time, she studied to be a Notary (in the UK, a Registrar). Joy’s first Notary assignment was to preside over the marriage of her brother Winston to Catherine at the Holiday Inn beachfront in Palm Bay. Joy inherited polycystic Kidney defect, and her kidneys failed in her mid which meant that she had renal dialysis 3 times per week. In spite of this set back, Joy continued to embrace and enjoy life. Joy seemed to have a gift for working with people and the Notary work kept her busy and active. Joy eventually married Curtis Anthony Tinsley on 27 December 2015. It was a lovely ceremony at her house in Palm Bay.Joy was very proud of her son Gavin who had a degree in Art. Joy was a great support to her mother Gladys for over 30 years in the city of Palm Bay.Joy had a great interest in the Weir Family Tree – linking up with near and distant cousins across the world. Joy was also interested in Astrology – Scorpio with Cancer rising sign. Joy loved music, dancing and food. Eventually, years of dialysis took hold and Joy passed away in Palm Bay Hospital on 27 March 2023. Joy joins our brother Peter, Grandma Kathleen, and father Raglan in the afterlife.Joy will be sorely missed by her husband Curtis, mother Gladys, brothers Robert, Raymond, Akin, and Winston, Brother cousins Jeff and Chris, Sister cousins Laurel, Precious and Pauline, Stepson Brandon, and Stepdaughters Asian and Renee Joy loved to party and always had a happy demean our even in dire circumstances. For me, she was always there very dependable and very funny. I shall miss you sis – rest in peace, love and light.
