Miss Billie’s life can best be described as a lesson in devotion. Devotion to God and family, and service to others. She and her late husband joined Skyway Hills Baptist Church in Pearl in 1966, shortly following the church’s establishment, and she was an active member until recent years when her health would not allow her to attend services regularly. She was a dedicated Sunday school teacher and took great joy in visiting and delivering food to church members and friends. She also enjoyed providing meals for current and visiting pastors. As a pastor’s wife Miss Billie, like her husband, was called to serve our Lord by serving His people, and she lovingly did so for her entire life.
As a faithful Christian wife and mother, Miss Billie was devoted to her family and delighted in caring for them. Miss Billie quietly instilled in their hearts a love for God and family and a sense of dignity of labor. As children her son and daughter were schooled in picking and shelling peas and butter beans, and assisted in routine household chores- tasks that, as adults, they valued for having taught them an appreciation of a job well done. Some of their favorite memories include the completion of the morning’s work so their mom could take them fishing or to the shopping center.
Miss Billie enjoyed a lengthy career as a secretary for the Mississippi State Hospital where she retired in 1996 after more than 20 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Stroud Edward Lowery; grandson, Stephen Andrew Harrison; parents, Charlie and Iva Stewart; brother, Talmage Stewart; and sisters, Frances Johnson, Charlene Watts, and Reba June Cole.
Survivors include son, Rev. Colin Lowery and wife Jennifer Lowery; daughter Sharon Harrison and husband Rev. Jeff Harrison; sister-in-law, Henrietta Garner; grandchildren, Brooke DePoyster and husband Jonathan, Brittany Upton and husband Cody, Jessica Evans and husband Drew, Alicia Parker and husband Ledger, Christin Webb and husband Jonathan, and Erin Abney and husband Chandler; and sixteen great-grandchildren- soon to be seventeen. Miss Billie is also survived by Tricia Breazeale, a very special friend who helped care for her in these last few years.
Her life, legacy, and testimony for Christ impacted and challenged numerous people to live godly lives, including her children, grandchildren, and great grands.
