Marilyn Rae Spoerl

Marilyn Rae (Hill) Spoerl was born in Sycamore, Illinois on January 22, 1937 to Ralph Stuart and Edna Alice (Burton) Hill. She went to Genoa-Kingston schools and graduated from Genoa-Kingston High School. Starting when she was 12-years-old, she began a career as a waitress, working at a truck stop and a restaurant in Genoa. She also worked for a factory and as an operator for the phone company.

She married Clyde Mohney on September 10, 1955 in Genoa, Illinois. Marilyn and Clyde had two children: David and Margo. In 1962, she and her children moved to Arizona where she spent the rest of her life. Very soon after arriving, she went to work as a waitress for Bill Johnson’s Big Apple Restaurant. On January 22, 1964, she married Donald Kalfas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Marilyn and Don had two more children: William (Billy) and Kristopher (Kris). Marilyn managed Bill Johnson’s El Diablo until it closed and then, later, managed a couple hotels. Then she got her realtors license and worked for Team Realty. In 2000, she became the office manager for Jerry Spoerl of Century Refrigeration, Inc. On June 30, 2007 Marilyn and Jerry were married in Alva, OK.

Marilyn was an artist, mainly working in oils. She pampered her pets and, among her many pleasures, she enjoyed reading, watching sports and living in the desert. More than that, Marilyn loved spending time with Jerry and adored her children and grandchildren. Even more than that, Marilyn loved Jesus Christ, serving Him personally and through the life of the Calvary Community Church. Marilyn passed from this life on May 24, 2017. She was “39 years old”. :)

Besides her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by one son, David. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Spoerl (Phoenix, AZ), her brother, Curt Hill (Genoa, IL), two daughters, Margo Mohney (Phoenix, AZ) and Trish Sattler and husband Bruce (Phoenix, AZ), three sons, Bill Kalfas and wife Sheila (Bethany, OK), Kris Kalfas and wife Terri (Queen Creek, AZ), and Charles Spoerl and wife Lisa (Phoenix, AZ), 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one Great Dane, Radar.

Services will be held Sunday, May 28 at 6:00pm at Calvary Community Church, 12612 N Black Canyon Hwy, Phoenix, AZ 85029.
