Patricia Ann (Nelson) Hallenborg, 72, passed away peacefully on October 16. Pat was born to Elbert (Al) and Cecile Nelson, both Navy officers. Although in her 20's she lived in Virginia and Orange County, she ultimately returned to her hometown and anchorage of San Diego.
Upon graduating Madison High in '66 as an A-student, she worked on a geology degree at both UCSD and SDSU before one day seeing the Federal job ad that would inspire her to move across country. At the US Army Map Service in Washington, DC, she found herself analyzing aerial imagery at the height of the Vietnam War. There she met her future husband Phil from Chicago, and after a few years they were resettled in California to begin a family.
Pat later earned her degree in geography from Cal State Fullerton, and then parlayed her education into an enjoyable civil engineering career. In later years she worked as a caregiver, once again finding reward in service - helping others navigate their most difficult years.
With a lifelong independent spirit, Pat embraced fun, adventure and storytelling with friends and loved ones. She traveled to Austria to meet pen-pals, to Australia with her son, and had great fun with friends and family in Vegas, Big Bear, and Baja. But her perfect day was a brunch, a day cruise or a dinner theater. She volunteered for the Solana Beach Historical Society and organized with the San Marcos Democratic Club.
Pat is survived by her brother Brent, son Eric, niece Samantha, and grandsons Teddy and Alex.
She is laid to rest at El Camino Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the American Cancer Society.
