Audrey Tibbitts, cherished wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully, April 28, in Pasadena, California, after 87 years of living life to the full. Born October 11, 1924, in the Eagle Rock home of her parents, Anton and Estrid Slottelid, Audrey was the eldest daughter of first generation immigrants from Norway and Sweden. She attended elementary, middle and high school in Eagle Rock before entering Occidental College where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English literature.
Her striking beauty and warm congeniality captured many hearts. In 1949, she married the love of her life, Samuel J. Tibbitts, whose 40-year career as aleadingpioneer and innovator of non-profit health care systems would not have been possible without Audrey’s full partnership and faithful collaboration. Together, Audrey and Sam travelled the nation and the world as ambassadors for the American Hospital Association during his tenure as chairman, and his leadership in a host of other healthcare forums. Her tireless service, impeccable elegance and gracious hospitality were hallmarks of their life and work together in the health care community where she became a beloved friend and mentor to countless women.
Audrey served as president of the Pasadena Assistance League (1975-76) and member of the board of directors for California Hospital Medical Center Foundation and the UCLA dean’s advisory council for the Los Angeles Public Health Department. With more than eight decades in the greater Pasadena area, including 30 years as a resident of San Marino, Audrey forged a far-reachingcircle of friends, faithfully following their lives as long as she was able.
Audrey was passionate about her family and took delight in each one. She will be deeply missed by her sons, Scott and Brett, and daughters-in-law Dawna and Dana. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy: Cole, Kyle, Brady, Lexi, Wes, Denae and Matthew. We remember her with gratitude for her love, charity, tenacity, grace, and unfailing smile. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and is now at rest in His loving arms.
She is preceded in death by her husband Sam (March 1994).
