

Born in the Rogue River Valley at Sacred Heart Hospital in Medford, Oregon on October 14,1924 to Elmer Byron Lucas and Hattie Elsie Iseminger-Lucas. She was their only child. The family dairy ranch was in Beagle, Oregon. She attended school in Antioch and Sam’s Valley and was active in the 4H Club and Forestry Club.
September 1, 1940 Ina Pearl Lucas from Sam’s Valley Grange is crowned Queen of the Jackson County Fair in Gold Hill.
Ina Pearl was the last living member of the Class of 1942 (14 graduates) from St. Mary’s Academy (1938-42) in Medford. Ina Pearl attended Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon 1943-1944.
Ina Pearl Lucas married Lawrence Raymond Phillips in Reno, Nevada on Dec. 3, 1952.Born to them was one child, Susan. Together they worked at the family Phillips Poultry business in Medford, Oregon. Lawrence preceded her in death on October 28, 1958.
Ina Pearl’s second husband was Charles Terry Shultz from Lampasas, Texas and Sprague River, Klamath County, Oregon. They lived in Medford, Oregon. Charles suddenly died on January 17, 1964 in Trinidad, Colorado.
Ina Pearl married Allen Richard Hilkey on July 19,1986 in Reno, Nevada. In 1990, they bought a home in Butte Falls, Oregon where Allen’s family resided. He logged and hauled logs and Ina Pearl was the bookkeeper for W. J. Cummings Logging Company. Ina Pearl and Allen would take their camper pick up and oversee the logging camp location for the time the logging would occur for that location. They planted a large garden each year and would preserve the harvest by canning. They spent many happy times hunting and fishing. She was a volunteer at the Butte Falls Public Library. They enjoyed Allen’s three daughters Joanne, Linda, and Lana and their families of 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Allen preceded her in death on November 11, 1996.
Ina Pearl was a bookkeeper by profession and worked for Del Rio Orchards in Gold Hill, and Harry and David Orchards and Packing in Medford. She worked for Valley Fuel Company for almost 20 years. Naumes Equipment and Fuel purchased Valley Fuel Company and she continued working there for 16 years. In Butte Falls, she volunteered in the library and church and worked as the U.S. Post Office Relief Postmaster. She was also a trained tax preparer and donated time assisting low-income seniors with filing their taxes.
Ina Pearl was a life-long Member of fraternal organizations Degree of Honor and Royal Neighbors of America, and she held many officer positions in Oregon. In 1997, Ina Pearl played the piano for the Degree of Honor National Convention held in Madison, Wisconsin and received the “Whatever It Takes” Certificate from Jacqueline A. Felling on August 16, 1997. In 2002, she was the Degree of Honor Oregon State President. She played piano at many local, state, and national meetings. She was a member of the Oregon State Grange, joining the Phoenix Grange #779 in the spring of 1989. During her 31 years of membership she held the offices of Musician 1989-1994, Treasurer 1994-2003, and Secretary in 2003.
Ina Pearl was an avid Oregon State Ducks fan and at 88 she attended the 98th Rose Bowl Football Game January 2nd, 2012 wearing her Oregon Duck hat and tee-shirt. She cheered Oregon on to their win 45-38 over Wisconsin. She loved watching all college sports.
In May of 2004, Ina Pearl relocated to live with her daughter Susan in Los Angeles County, California.
In October 2008, Ina Pearl moved into assisted living and received exceptional and loving care at the Jean Jugan Residence operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro. She was active in the residence and served as President of the Residence Association, Editor of the “The Insider”, and volunteered as librarian. She loved to play bingo, dominoes, bridge and rummy, and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. She served as Secretary of Little Sisters of the Poor Auxiliary and volunteered in Auxiliary gift shop and at the annual LSP Holiday Boutique. In 2015, she received the Little Sisters of the Poor Volunteer Recognition Five Years of service Jeanne Jugan Auxiliary Order of Malta Western Association U.S.A.
She was a member of St. Peter’s By the Sea Presbyterian Church and a sustaining member of Community Bible Church of Butte Falls, OR.
Ina Pearl is survived by her only child, Susan Phillips Sanborn. Grandchildren: David, Michael, Jordan, and Farrah Bradfield (Intindola). Step-Grandson: Erland Sanborn, Step Great-Grandchildren: Ryan and Valarie Moreno, and Asante Jackson. Great-Grandchildren: Jared, Dominic, Priscilla, Jacob, Caleb and Calleigh Bradfield. Great-Great Granddaughter: Aria Bradfield.
There will be a future announcement of memorial service. Ina Pearl will be interred with her veteran husband, Allen R. Hilkey, at the United States National Cemetery at Eagle Point Jackson County, Oregon.
