George Shuck, 92, died peacefully in Nokomis, FL on February 19, 2012. Born in West Frankfort, IL, George resided most of his life on the Connecticut Shoreline before his retirement to Florida in 1982.
As president and owner of Saybrook Yacht Yard Inc. , a boatyard located on the CT river in Old Lyme, CT, and builder of over a thousand Blue Jay and Lightning class sailboats, across 30 plus years, George's lifetime work was also a passion. His enthusiasm for the Blue Jay class and class racing, his close work with countless sailing programs and his love for the water inspired many of the lives he touched, beginning with his children, their spouses, grandchildren and thousands of young men and women whose love for the water and sailing began on a Saybrook Yacht Yard built sailboat. Saybrook Yacht Yard built many award- winning boats including a 3rd place finisher at the world championships in Naples, Italy in 1962. Overall, the Saybrook built sailboats enjoyed a reputation for being very fast and well-constructed.
