She was active in her work for human rights, women's rights and religious freedom, working with the NAACP, the ACLU, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, NARAL and Planned Parenthood. She walked her first picket line in 1963, in support of the southern lunch counter sit-ins, and her last at age 90, in support of Women's rights.
