Martin Raymond Langer passed away from congestive heart failure at the age of 85 years, at the Sanctuary at Fraser Villa in Fraser, MI. He was loved by all those who knew him. He is survived by two brothers, John H. Langer of Bethesda, MD, Paul W. Langer of Sterling Heights, MI, and his sister Rose V. Lapansie of Grosse Pointe, MI, and 17 nephews and nieces. Among them, Terry Vertalka, who helped him in his last years. His family and his many friends will sorely miss him.
Marty was born in Detroit on May 24, 1931. He attended St. Charles Borromeo grade and high school in Detroit. In 1951, the Korean war interrupted his studies at the University of Detroit and he served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Returning, he and his family moved to St. Clair Shores. He then competed his studies and became a teacher in the Lake Shore Public Schools in St. Clair Shores, where he lived with his family. He also earned a Master's degree from the U of D. and another in special education from Oakland University. He taught Biology and then became a counselor. He managed a Medical testing laboratory, but returned to teaching, retiring after 40 years. He was also a skilled carpenter. In later years he collected coins, helped others, including his dear friend Patricia Harvey, who died a decade ago. In his last years his heart condition and cancer caused him to limit his activities, but he was able to live alone until the last few months of his life.
Visitation will be at the Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Ave., St Clair Shores on October 4 from 3pm to 9pm with a prayer service at 7 pm. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 5 at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 18201 Clinton River Rd. Clinton, MI.
