On November 5th, 1946, Charles Alphonsus was born to his now late parents Neil and Marion (Lahey) MacKinnon in Sydney NS. Growing up in a large family, he and his siblings were instilled with a strong work ethic which he brought with him to the NS Vocational School where he graduated into the refrigeration trade. Charlie began working with Modern City Dairy in various roles before moving onto the Radar Base. After the base closed, he began work with JR Mahoneys Ltd on a term basis that ultimately turned into a full-time position which he held for many years. One final career change found Charlie following the path of his mother Marion and other siblings into the catering business. He established his branch of the MacKinnon Catering family tree alongside his wife Joan, brother Bryden and sister-in-law Martena with many family members and friends participating throughout the years.
Charlie is survived by Joan his wife of 53 years, his son Colin (Cheryl) and their children Victoria and Olivia, his daughter Kyla (Donald) and their children Sophie, Samantha and the only grandson Charles, his namesake. Also, by his siblings Campbell, Angus, Russell, Ann, Hughena, Florence and Alena.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by siblings Joe, Pat, Pauline, Edna, Allan ‘CP”, Fabien and Bryden.
For almost 30 years Charlie fought off Cancer time after time and persevered but now he is at rest. He was so grateful for the support of all those that saw him through his toughest days, most notably, Dr. Paul Murphy and Dr. Christine MacLean (Sydney), Dr. Mark Taylor, and Dr. Daniel French (Halifax) along with the countless medical professionals and support staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Center.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 2nd at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney from 3-7pm followed by a Funeral Mass on Friday Jan. 3rd at 1:00pm to be held at St. Mary’s church, Frenchvale where Charlie was a devout member.
