I reached out to Nancy last winter after discovering her Master’s thesis which was completed on the FortWhyte Alive clay-pit lake systems. She and her colleagues published the first known “conditions” report on these well-loved water bodies. As I was completing a full report on the lakes in my role as coordinator of our long-term water monitoring, I was so pleased when she reached right back to me and immediately offered her support and review. We met in person and she provided some great insights and knowledge - and expressed interest in continuing to be involved. She was a delightful person and on behalf of FortWhyte, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends on this sudden, major loss of a loved one.

Nancy was a wonderful friend and colleague and her passing is a great and painful shock. Students in my courses loved having Nancy as their instructor and I know my course evaluations were boosted by Nancy’s involvement. Having Nancy along on a field trip or extended field work was a guarantee of an enthusiastic co-worker and a great companion. When it came to fieldwork Nancy was always up for it; we grubbed in the dirt for fossil reptiles around Morden, took ecology and ichthyology classes hither and yon, and spent weeks at the Rockwood Hatchery. Often Nancy’s presence was purely voluntary. I will always remember watching the Northern Lights with her after our little walleye larvae research group ended long sessions at the fish hatchery. Thanks to Nancy our family has enjoyed a cottage, something that probably would not have happened had Nancy not invited the larval group to her mom’s cottage at Winnipeg Beach after a long session at the hatchery. Such a friend, such a loss - Ric Moodie
Everyone who knew Nancy loved her. She was so much fun and such a good person. I’ll always remember her many kindnesses to our family, especially her bringing me comfort food when I was undergoing breast cancer treatment and her visiting my mother when she was in a personal care home. It’s impossible to adequately express how much we will miss her. Patti Moodie

I had the privilege of going to Prague as one of the chaperones with Nancy when Megan and my son Matthew were in PTV together. She was such a all around wonderful person. Condolences to Megan, her family and all of friends.

I owe a lot to Nancy's passion for teaching Chordates. Thanks to her, I had my first opportunity to TA/demo for the lab, which has led to many amazing ventures. I still remember sitting in the class in awe of the amazing story of the origins and expansion of vertebrate life. Nancy was an incredible teacher, and I know she will be dearly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of being in one of her classes. My thoughts go out to her family, rest assured she will never be forgotten.

I’m so sad to hear that Nancy passed away- she was the best biology teacher I had in University. She was always so engaged, excited, and kind, and that radiated in her interactions with us as students. My thoughts are with her family. She’ll be missed.
