Ignacio “PeeWee” Alamos Torres

Ignacio “PeeWee” Alamos, 95, went to be with the Lord on November 5, 2019 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind children Patricia Zimmer, Ana (Vic) Jaussaud, Richard (Pam) Alamos, Michael (Pam) Alamos, Susie (Steve) Switzer, 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, sister Claudia, his sister-in-law Ruth (Leon) Gutierrez, and many, many close friends. Born in Casper, Wyoming to Manuel and Francis (Torres) Alamos, PeeWee soon moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, where he was raised. He attended school through the 8th grade, when he decided to leave school and work in order to help support his family. In his early years, PeeWee held many jobs — from ditch-digging, to grave-digging, to sheep-herding with his dad, to picking produce with his wife and two children. After meeting his soulmate, Susie M. Arellano, in 1941, they were married on May 21, 1943 in Toppenish, WA. Together, they welcomed and loved six children. In November of 1958, they moved their family to Yakima, WA. After working various jobs, PeeWee joined the Laborers Union. Just this fall, he proudly received his 68-year membership pin. He worked on several projects such as the missile bases, all the dams along the Columbia River, and Hanford. He retired in 1983, which marked the start of happy adventuring with his wife Susie. Together, they traveled all over the USA, Canada, and Mexico — often in their motor home, which sported Good Sam Club stickers from each state visited. They also enjoyed many cruises, flights to other countries, and exploring Europe. Dad had an adventurous spirit, however that spirit was often tested by the many requests from mom: to dress up for a masquerade in New Orleans, to ride tandem bicycles in Wyoming, to ride horses on the beach in Mexico, and even to attend a TOPS Convention, which she said was, “just right here” in Montreal, Canada. “Close, PeeWee.” Dad remained fiercely independent, driving until 91-years of age, at which time he switched roles to driving instructor. He never hesitated to afford us driving lessons while on the way to church, the Casino (his “work”), or one of many family functions. After mom’s death, dad remained at home where he lived by himself. After a surgery in December of 2014, he returned home with a new “companion” — a locking leg brace. Our family decided to “visit” around-the-clock, 24/7/365. This family support lasted until his passing at home, which was his last wish. He fulfilled that wish, when he closed his eyes in his own room, surrounded by his large, loving family. Dad was most proud when surrounded by his big family. He is most remembered for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his generous, kind spirit. He had a passion for the outdoors, fishing, hunting, travelling, and going “to work” gambling at the casino. Dad spent time with family watching baseball, old-westerns, and sitting together to share in genuine conversation. He was an excellent storyteller. Even with such a large family, Dad took pride in each and every member, snuggled each and every baby, and smiled broadly at everyone who walked in the door. His capacity to love deeply was remarkable. Dad was devoted to his St. Joseph Church and always looked forward to attending and visiting with his Church family. His faith remained strong and steady throughout. He is reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife of 64 years, Susie, their son Ignacio “PeeWee” Jr., his mother, father, 3 brothers, 1 sister, and 2 great-grandsons. Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to those who aided in his care: Dr. Cone, Dr. Bethel, Good Samaritan Health Care Center, and Heartlinks Hospice. Viewing will be held at Langevin El Paraiso Funeral Home on Friday November 15, 2019 at 5:00-8:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm. His funeral will be held at St. Joseph Church on Saturday, November 16 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heartlinks Hospice.
