Robert was born on July 7, 1943 in Yonkers, NY where he lived until his retirement from teaching. He was the son of Joseph and Grace Ruyack and the younger brother of Joseph. He had many beloved aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, who were mainly in New York. He graduated Iona college and St John’s University where he studied religion, philosophy, Spanish language and literature. His studies inspired and imbued his life. He moved to Florida over 20 years ago, first part time then full time. He died in Pompano on April 15, 2023 at 79, too soon for the many who miss him.
The best words to describe Robert are faithful, loving, dedicated, generous, energetic and fun. He had a strong faith in God and dedication to the Church. He was especially devoted to the Eucharist and the Rosary. He was a Eucharistic Minister and sang in several choirs.
His devotion to his faith was matched by his loving devotion to his family and close friends. His mother Grace and partner Russ were central to his life. Bob was always there for his friends and relatives, for fun, for advice, for support. The proof is the many life-long friendships he nurtured and sustained.
That same dedication and support was given to his students. Bob taught Spanish language and literature for 35 years in high school in NY and in college in Florida. He was a beloved and lively teacher and was nationally recognized for his and his students’ achievements. He used Spanish literature to discuss morality, philosophy and the human condition. He won the respect and love of his students as shown by the many postings of tribute on his obituary page.
Bob had great physical and intellectual energy and a teasing, playful sense of humor. He loved to entertain friends, loved parties – especially if they were for him. Bob could be outrageously funny and a little theatrical. He planned every one of his own birthday parties, usually with a theme, ever since he was a teen. He was planning his 80th when he died suddenly. His last years were difficult and had robbed him of his mobility and zest. He missed his NY family and friends but stayed close with daily phone calls. He will be missed by so many but always in their thoughts and prayers.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Robert Ruyack on July 7, 2023 on what would have been his 80th birthday. His cremains will be buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, NY.
