Joseph Daniel Cleary Sr.

Joe passed peacefully at home in Clayton Ca. surrounded by his family on Feb 8th. He was born in 1941 in Philadelphia, PA to John and Dorothy Cleary. He was the 5th of seven children. He graduated from Frankford High school and joined the Marine Corps. After the Marine Corps he worked for Boeing before joining United Airlines. He had a long career with United Airlines working in New York, Washington Dc, Philadelphia, Honolulu, San Francisco and Oakland. He retired after a 36 year career. His love for baseball led him to coaching Little League Baseball for Clayton Valley. It was one of the happiest times with his son Joey. When his Grandchildren were born he found his purpose. Watching his Grandchildren grow and participate in sports was the joy of his life. Joe is survived by his wife Irene (Rene), four children: Yvette Ipsen (Kent), Colleen Cleary, Eddie Perrey (Lynn) and Joe Cleary Jr. (Hilary). He is Poppy to six amazing Grandchildren. Kristian Ipsen, Lauren Ipsen, Connor Perrey, Grace Cleary, Finn Cleary and Audrey Cleary. He is also survived by his beloved sister Dorothy Leahy and loving brother Dennis Cleary and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy Cleary, his brothers John Cleary, James Cleary and Kevin Cleary and his sister Frances Miller. The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice Walnut Creek for the tender care especially his caregiver Lupita Venegas Iddings who went above and beyond. She is truly an angel. We would like to thank Blanca Medrano from St Bonaventure’s Community who brought Communion to Joe every Sunday for over a year. Special thanks to Oxygen Plus for taking care of Joe for many years.

Services will be held on Monday, February 24th at noon at St Bonaventure’s Catholic Church in Concord Ca. followed by a reception at Skipolinis in Clayton. Interment will be private with family at Sacramento Valley National Veterans Cemetery. Donations in his honor can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project.
