Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium provides funeral, cremation and memorial services in Calgary and surrounding areas.

Chapel at Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium

Chapel at Foster's Garden Chapel & CrematoriumLocated on 4th Street Northwest, the funeral home is just a 20-minute drive from Calgary International Airport, with a public transit stop near our front entrance. The chapel's exit leading to our climate-controlled concourse provides comfortable funeral vehicle access throughout the year. The entire building is wheelchair accessible.

The chapel and fireside lounge

Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium has a distinctly warm and comforting environment. Our 23,500-square-foot Tudor-style building includes one of the larger funeral chapels in Calgary. It seats 250 people and has lovely 16-foot stained-glass windows that span floor to ceiling. The chapel features oak pews and a cathedral-style ceiling, creating excellent acoustics. Families have a choice of organ or digital grand piano for musical accompaniment.

Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium is located directly across from Queen’s Park Cemetery. We’re experienced at coordinating burial needs with this cemetery and others throughout Calgary and the surrounding area. For families choosing cremation, we have an on-site crematorium.

The Foster's team celebrates life

Sitting area at Foster's Garden Chapel & CrematoriumWe pride ourselves on having compassionate and sincere associates who embody a deep commitment to caring. They are experienced in serving people of many faiths, cultures and backgrounds.

We've adapted to the diverse needs and wants of the community when it comes to funerals and celebration of life services. Though many families choose traditional funeral services, the team also offers contemporary options and personalized services.

If desired, our Dignity Memorial® celebrant will visit with your family, discover the story of your loved one and create a ceremony that beautifully incorporates their hobbies, passions and spirit. The creative possibilities are endless.

Asian services and burning room

Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium is specially equipped for services for Asian and Buddhist families. A room with a fireplace is conveniently located adjacent to our chapel to accommodate traditional burning ceremonies with the maximum safety and comfort.

Our team has extensive experience in planning ceremonies according to Chinese traditions as well. Even for Canadians who are 2nd- and 3rd-generation Chinese, we can offer guidance in traditional customs. If your family members speak only Chinese, let us know and we can bring in someone who speaks fluent Chinese.

History

Front exterior building at Foster's Garden Chapel & CrematoriumThe founder of what is now Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium was Cy Foster. He opened his original funeral home on 16th Avenue Northwest in Calgary, under the name Foster’s Garden Chapel on a freezing December 3, 1956. He had 7 calls that first month, 15 the next and 300 by the end of the first year.

The funeral home business grows

Over the years, Cy partnered with the Gooder Brothers to open 2 other funeral homes: Cy Foster-Gooder’s Chapel on the Hill (located at 1708 16th Ave. NW) and Cy Foster-Gooder Hillside Chapel (located at 1635 17th Ave. SW).

In the 1980s, Foster's decided to open a new funeral home that would be an amalgamation of the 3 original funeral homes. Construction at our present location, across from Queen’s Park Cemetery, began in 1988. The new Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium opened on July 27, 1989.

Upholding a tradition

Though it’s been decades since Cy opened his first funeral home, the team at Foster's Garden Chapel & Crematorium upholds his commitment to helping families through the emotional challenges of planning funerals, cremations and burials.

"Our family is grateful for the staff of Fosters, Calgary, in preparing for our Dad's funeral. When I first telephoned after Dad died, I was quickly talking to a funeral director who kindly outlined the process. In making arrangements, the costs of various services were made clear to us and we did not feel pressured to purchase services or products. Options available were made clear to us so that we could make arrangements that suited our Dad and family. Each staff person treated us kindly and responded promptly to our questions. We are also grateful for Foster's Senior Family Service Advisor and her work with us."
