A Long Beach funeral home for everyone

Reception room at Stricklin/Snively MortuaryStricklin/Snively Mortuary features a multilingual team to serve the rich and diverse Long Beach community. Our team members can speak English, Spanish and Khmer. In addition to our spacious chapel, we also feature an on-site crematory, which is important for certain religions and cultures. Having a crematory on-site also provides families with peace of mind as it ensures that their loved one will not have to leave our care.

If you wish to have a catered reception, we can coordinate with a professional caterer so you don't have to worry about the food and drink in your time of need.

Let's celebrate life

Each person's life is unique, and as such, we believe that no two funeral services should be alike. The imaginative team at Stricklin/Snively Mortuary excels at creating one-of-a-kind memorials that celebrate a person's passions and personality.

We can find inspiration almost anywhere. Did he spend his weekends hitting the links? How about a putting green in the chapel and personalized golf balls for all who attend? If she had a green thumb, we could decorate our event space with her favorite plants and give a customized seed packet to each guest as a keepsake.

There are thousands of ways to celebrate a life. No matter what you envision, we'll go the extra mile to make it happen.

Cremation services

We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways, and families love our transparent pricing. With expertise in scattering ashes and a friendly team who pays attention to every detail, we provide service that is second to none.

More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with the many options:

  • a cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind.
  • a funeral with your loved one present, followed by cremation.
  • a cremation followed by a scattering, cemetery memorialization or celebration of life—or all three.

For those who wish for a more momentous memorial, Neptune Memorial Reef is an underwater cremation garden off the coast of Florida. A Celestis Memorial Spaceflight takes ashes into space for a little while or forever.

There are many options for cremation—and they're not all equal. Here's what you can expect when you choose us for your loved one's cremation:

  • Custody of care guaranteed. Our custody-of-care program helps safeguard the identification of your loved one from the time we bring them into our care until the time we return them to your family. We check, cross-check and check again, every step of the way.
  • Exclusive custody of your loved one. We operate a private, on-site crematory and work with trusted partners. Once your loved one is in our custody or that of a trusted partner, they’re in our care until they’re returned to your family.
  • Licensed, certified, conscientious staff. All Dignity Memorial crematory operators are licensed and certified by Cremation Association of North America, or CANA. Only one person at a time is cremated, and the cremation chamber is thoroughly cleaned before the next person is cremated.

History

Front exterior at Stricklin/Snively MortuaryStricklin/Snively Mortuary dates back to 1905 when Edgar and Kate McFadyen opened McFadyen Mortuary in Long Beach. The firm was one of the few Long Beach undertaking parlors in operation at the time. The mortuary was first located at 135 East 3rd St., presently the site of the Southern California Edison Company.

Relocation and horse business

The funeral home continued at that location until 1919 when the firm moved to 1952 Long Beach Blvd., then called American Avenue. This new location was some distance from the mainstream of Long Beach proper. To counter balance this potential disadvantage, the McFadyens operated their own livery stable, a practice not uncommon for the more progressive businesses of the time. Funeral procession transportation by carriage was available for $3, and a surrey could be rented for 50 cents more.

Changes in ownership

After Mr. McFadyen died in 1928, his widow continued the business until it was sold to Bill and Louise Sheelar in 1948. In 1966, the mortuary was acquired by the Stricklin family. Ray and Randy Stricklin, who brought nearly 30 years of mortuary experience to the new business, assumed the daily operation with an excellent staff.

The impact of the Long Beach Redevelopment Project

The Long Beach Redevelopment Project began to change the face of the city in 1979. At that time, Patterson & Snively Mortuary, which had been located at the corner of 6th Avenue and Locust Avenue since 1914, was forced to relocate.

Officially becoming Stricklin/Snively Mortuary

Wilbur Snively, owner of that firm, then joined the mortuary on Long Beach Boulevard and the new Stricklin/Snively Mortuary was officially formed.

In 1980, at an expense of more than $1,000,000, a total renovation project was completed. The newly remodeled mortuary included a greatly expanded chapel area, 5 spacious drawing rooms, many indoor and outdoor garden areas and a larger parking lot to accommodate vehicles during large funeral services.

Our crematory is built

Another new development was completed in 1983 with the opening of the Long Beach Crematory. In an effort to provide the most complete range of funeral service options, Stricklin/Snively Mortuary installed its own cremation facility. The crematory is now managed and operated by Stricklin/Snively's own team for the added convenience of planning a cremation in a single convenient location.

Our commitment to honesty and quality

For more than a century, the professionals at Stricklin/Snively Mortuary have served the funeral needs of the Long Beach community with the finest in personal mortuary care. Honesty, quality and personal concern are Stricklin/Snively Mortuary traditions, which have been followed throughout our entire history. We pledge to continue those traditions for generations to come.
