Kemp was raised in Southside Virginia, where he first became interested in funeral service while working part time for the local funeral home during high school. Kemp developed a deep appreciation for the care and professionalism that was offered to families during one of the most difficult times of their lives.
Having been a licensed funeral director since the 1980s, it still makes Kemp proud when he is able to help a family make funeral arrangements, either at the time of a death or in advance through pre-arrangements.
Kemp is active in professional associations and is past president of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association. During his 4 decades in the profession he has also volunteered on various rescue squads and fire departments and has been a member of the Ruritan, Rotary and Lions clubs. Kemp and his wife live in Lynchburg and when he's not working, they both enjoy RVing and spending time with family.
