Robert Jennings Taylor, Sr. (“RJ”) passed away peacefully June 23, 2020 at the age of 95 from diabetes and congestive heart failure. He was born on February 6, 1925 in Highland Park, Michigan to William and Arvilla Taylor. He was married to Joyce Naniene DeClaire on May 19, 1951 who preceded him in death in 2006.
RJ is survived by four children, Rob Taylor (Robert Jr.) and his wife Priscilla, Jill Taylor, Laurel Thorley and her husband Denny Thorley, and David Taylor; his 10 grandchildren, Jessica DeBoer, Heidi Taylor, Evan Hays, Derek Hays, Jamie Thorley, Damon Thorley, Cortney Thorley, Brionna Taylor, Eveliina Taylor, and Annika Taylor; his 6 great-grandchildren, Layla Hays, Dillon Hays, Sophia Deboer, Joy DeBoer, Easton Hays, and Marlow Thorley.
RJ graduated from U of M with a degree in Engineering. He was a life long member of the Chi Phi fraternity. He served in the air corp during WWII in the Pacific theatre from July 1943- March 1946. Throughout his career he worked in engineering sales for various companies the last being L.O.R.D. corporation.
Later in his working life RJ obtained a Masters in Business Administration and taught business and mathematics at Mott’s Community College. He was also a member of the Ann Arbor Kiwanis Club.
Downhill skiing was one of RJ’s passions. He taught all his children to ski. Family and friends enjoyed many adventurous ski trips organized by RJ and his wife, Joyce. RJ also enjoyed playing golf and tennis. He loved Golden Retrievers and owned numerous dogs, both as pets and therapy pets, throughout his life.
Even more than skiing, RJ loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His children have memories of skiing and driving vacations out west. His grandchildren have memories of playing on “Papa’s Island” and the grandchildren remember his patience and willingness to sit and play games. He loved them all dearly and was much loved by them all.
