

On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Dan Lester Haymons, Jr. passed away at the age of 83. Les was born on November 20, 1936 in Lumber City, Georgia, to Dan Lester Haymons and Amanda Grace Haymons. He grew up in Moultrie,Georgia and graduated from Moultrie Senior High School before attaining degrees from Norman College, Valdosta State College, The University of Minnesota (Master of Hospital Administration, 1963), Rockhurst College (Master in Business Administration, 1990), and the College of Financial Planning (2000). He also completed US Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1958 before serving as a communications officer to the staff of the Admiral, Commander Western Pacific. He married Bettye Lynn Manner in 1964. They raised two children, Lesley Lynn and Christopher. He had a long career in health care, culminating with the position of Chief Executive Officer of a major hospital in Kansas City. Les is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Mark Haymons, Matt Haymons, and Florence Haymons Moore. He is survived by his wife, Bettye Manner Haymons;
daughter Lesley Lynn Davies and her husband Mark Davies of Tampa, Florida; son Christopher Haymons and his wife Melinda Haymons of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren Alexandra, Reed, and Tyler Haymons, and Lucian Davies; siblings Sylvia Gellner of Forestville, Maryland, Betty Jo Barber of Satellite Beach, Florida, and Tonita Legette of Moultrie, Georgia.
From hardscrabble beginnings he developed a strong sense of perpetual intellectual curiosity and upward mobility. He was a first-generation college graduate and earned multiple advanced degrees. He overcame many obstacles with his determination, tenacity and work ethic and taught us all that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. As an accomplished US Naval Officer, healthcare executive, CEO, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he achieved many successes. Most notably, he lived a life of significance. He loved and helped others in reaching for their dreams and potential through his kindness, loyalty and generosity. He loved spending time with his family, cooking, studying French, reading, hiking, biking, and snow skiing. Additionally, he enjoyed spending time in the mountains of Colorado and on the beaches of Florida. He was dignified and walked a path of integrity and humility. His legacy is in his family and friends and the lessons he instilled in them, helping shape character in all who knew him well.
A memorial service is planned for July 21 at 9:00 am at Saint John’s Cathedral, 1350 N Washington St, Denver, CO 80203, followed by a celebration of life reception at 10:30, outside at the home of Bettye Haymons. Due to current Covid-19 safety protocols, Saint John’s Cathedral is limiting attendance to no more than 50 people.
